Hello edit

Did we meet at Wikipedia Day LA? (I'm very sloppy about matching real-life people and Wikimedia userids...)

The Indigenous Peoples project isn't very active yet, but I am happy to kick ideas for your project around with you. (You can email me from my User page, or we can chat on-Wiki.) I have a very clear visual memory of watching a sandpainting demonstration at a Sherman open house (or similar event) with my dad about 60 years ago, when I was very small and we lived in Colton. - PKM (talk) 19:15, 7 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@PKM: Thanks for getting in touch! I wasn't at Wikipedia Day LA, unfortunately.
I'll share the link to the first batch of Sherman photos once they're up online (should be in the next month or so). It's been a really great project to get to be part of! I've heard lots of long-time locals mention memories similar to yours.
The main use case I've been thinking about for Wikidata in relation to that project has been for names of tribes-- we use Library of Congress authorities for most names and subjects in the descriptive metadata, but they're often wildly inaccurate/dated/offensive for names of tribes. So far, we've been editing/replacing the Library of Congress terms manually, based on individual judgment, but Wikidata labels seem to be a fairly reliable source for reflecting more commonly used and preferred terms. So I've been thinking about writing a script we'd use locally to query Wikidata to replace Library of Congress terms (both for this collection and others). But I'm also thinking this would also require some prep-work in reviewing and enhancing Wikidata items for tribes, and making sure they're linked to Library of Congress identifiers. However, I'm not sure when I'll have time to dive full-on into this! Mostly just an idea percolating for now. Certainstars (talk) 21:43, 10 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
If you go that way, I can definitely help. I spent some time last fall matching NARA locations to Wikadata items, and they have many reservations in their database, so I ended up making sure there were separate items for tribes and reservations, linking them together, and generally cleaning things up. I'd be happy to pick up that work again - I've been heads-down on textiles for six months and I could use a change of pace. - PKM (talk) 22:35, 10 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
