Hyperknot
Welcome to Wikidata, Hyperknot!
Wikidata is a free knowledge base that you can edit! It can be read and edited by humans and machines alike and you can go to any item page now and add to this ever-growing database!
Need some help getting started? Here are some pages you can familiarize yourself with:
- Introduction – An introduction to the project.
- Wikidata tours – Interactive tutorials to show you how Wikidata works.
- Community portal – The portal for community members.
- User options – including the 'Babel' extension, to set your language preferences.
- Contents – The main help page for editing and using the site.
- Project chat – Discussions about the project.
- Tools – A collection of user-developed tools to allow for easier completion of some tasks.
Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask on Project chat. If you want to try out editing, you can use the sandbox to try. Once again, welcome, and I hope you quickly feel comfortable here, and become an active editor for Wikidata.

OSM relation id's
editPlease don't blank values for OSM relation id's. It's possible that multiple Wikidata items have the same relation because of some weird split up. Multichill (talk) 20:27, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi Multichill! OK, I won't use them in the future. But I wanted to note that there should be no two articles pointing to the same OSM ids, it really doesn't happen in the 4800 ISO1 and ISO2 regions in Wikidata. The reason is very simple, OSM has a clear distinction about council, ceremonial county, admin_level, etc. values. The ones you added are right, but the old ones should be removed to make sure it's a one-to-one mapping. I believe the right rule of thumb is that GSS Code + ISO code + OSM ID should be on the "main" article and none of these should be on the "alternative" one. (Except in case when a ceremonial county exists on OSM)
I'm actually developing a project which maps all Wikidata IDs and OSM admin_levels and merges them to a full planet GeoJSON extract. It'll be like an OSM alternative to Natural Earth, based only on comminity edited data. UK has been by far the most difficult region of all countries on Earth. I've made a lot of edits to correctly map the ceremonial Wiki <> ceremonial OSM, unitary council <> admin_level OSM etc. In every other country I only had to fix like 2-3 errors, in UK I think I did 100 edits in OSM <> Wiki.
Here is my project on GitHub: https://github.com/hyperknot/country-levels
Here is the current UK page: https://github.com/hyperknot/country-levels-export/blob/master/docs/iso2_list/GB.md
And finally here is a forum thread I opened on OSM about this: https://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=69064
It'd be great if we could clean up and automate the mapping of UK counties on OSM <> Wikidata by using a script, but unfortunately that is out of my expertise both for Wikidata and OSM.
