Question edit

Is it to much to ask which petscan criteria do you use in order to assign languages spoken, written or signed (P1412)->Catalan (Q7026) to a particular individual? I suspect the property is becoming useless (as in providing wrong information) because of this kind of things as well as other previous runs of petscan by other users (paralelling the already useless native language (P103))...--Asqueladd (talk) 00:08, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Basically playing with this category and subcategories trying to take out a lot that don't make sense. Kind of tricky for Catalan since one can always argue that person didn't speak the language even if they where born and raised in Catalonia (I imagine that for French people in the last 1000 years languages spoken, written or signed (P1412)->French (Q150) is never discussed). I didn't even try with native language (P103) which would be even more polemical... Suggestions accepted. Kind of important in my view to query against ("how many Catalan politicians did...") Thanks for double-checking! --Jey (talk) 20:46, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I am perfectly aware of the native language (P103) nonsense particularly with French language (and suffered the junk data in Wikipedia infoboxes) as well as the country of citizenship (P27) Spain (Q29) for 16th century people. There are many examples of misuse of the tool. Suggestion: Although I personally would be very wary of such kind of categorization (because presuming location implies language is bound to create a huge amount of mistakes anyways) —that is my first suggestion ;)—, at least —2nd suggestion— in case you still want to apply a run on categories of "people who have held and office in Catalonia, Balearic Islands or whatever at some point," apply an additional SPARQL constrain in petscan, wdt:P31 wd:Q5 + wdt:P19/wdt:P131* wd:Q5705 (human born in Catalonia), in order to reduce the damage of the overstatement (I repeat: although it is still wrong to do so because diglosia and non-competent speakers in urban enviroments have been there for a while in addition to "accidental births"), and "just" presume somebody born in Catalonia and holding an office in Catalonia speaks Catalan.--Asqueladd (talk) 21:08, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Will try! Some assumptions are always required but try to make as few mistakes as possible. Thanks again! --Jey (talk) 21:26, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
