Openaccess CMA bot blocked

Hi Multichill. My name's Ethan Holda and I'm the director of technology at Cleveland Museum of Art. Our bot and our user were permanently blocked for adding "junk" to wikidata. The bot code was developed by Dominic Byrd-McDevitt to help us get our artwork scholarship and assets into wikidata. Since we've been blocked, I can't even apply for permissions. Can you tell me the next step here? --Ethanholda (talk) 14:54, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

@Ethanholda: yes User:Openaccess cma was running wild, unclear who was running it and wasn't approved (I did think of Dominic). In case of a bot a block is just a technical measure to prevent more damage (that can be lifted any time, don't worry about that). Sorry for calling it junk, that was a bit too harsh.
Dominic should have gone through the bot approval process before he handed it over to you.
The concern is with item of collection or exhibition (Q18593264). This item shouldn't be used at all, see Talk:Q18593264. You generally don't want to add things that just have been removed by a user. Also some other improvements might be needed (like not overwriting descriptions with descriptions that are not better). Is the code somewhere public?
When it comes to robots you have the operator, for example me user:Multichill and the robot, for example user:BotMultichill. The operator (you) should be the one applying at Wikidata:Requests for permissions/Bot. Can you do that? I can imagine that you want to wait a bit and do it in the new year. If you just disable the job for now I can lift the block. Multichill (talk) 15:14, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
When we were developing our workflow for this, we also worked with Maarten ... and Andrew Lih (among others in the community), so I would really like to better understand what you are referring to with "running wild" and the overwriting of descriptions. Again, all our content comes from our curatorial department's scholarship. So two questions 1. How can we get our bot unblocked? (since I cannot submit a request from the bot's owner) and 2. What was the exact behavior of the bot that was problematic? --Ethanholda (talk) 17:32, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
Ethan, I rarely use my given name (Maarten) around here.
A robot is a tool like a chainsaw or a gun. A tool needs to have an operator who is responsible for the tool. If the tool doesn't have an operator it's running wild.
  1. The tool is currently blocked from editing, but you're not. As I mentioned before, the operator (that is you) needs to apply at Wikidata:Requests for permissions/Bot to get the bot unblocked.
  2. The problematic behavior I have encountered is the adding of item of collection or exhibition (Q18593264) after it was removed (example) and changing descriptions to something worse (see Help:Description).

Multichill Sorry! I didn't realize it was you. I'm kind of just trying to figure all this stuff out because previously it has been other developers managing this, so apologies in advance for any rudimentary mistakes. Regarding your points:
  1. My understanding was that openaccess_cma was the operator and the bot itself is openaccess_cma_bot. And as such, openaccess_cma needed to be the account to submit the request for openaccess_cma_bot. Am I misunderstanding the relationship between these two accounts? Both accounts are blocked. From what I am understanding, I can submit the request as Ethanholda. Is that correct?
  2. How is the problem of adding items that have been removed or updating descriptions usually handled? what I'm hearing is that I need to resolve these issues before the bot can be reinstated, or I'll just get blocked again.
Best, --Ethanholda (talk) 16:29, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
Happy New Year! I'd like to edit our code and resubmit with myself as the operator, but I'm not sure what changes to make. My understanding is using a different item type, but I want to make sure I'm understanding and addressing your concerns before proceeding. Can you recommend the next step? --Ethanholda (talk) 23:41, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
@Ethanholda: I'm waiting for you to file a bot request at Wikidata:Requests for permissions/Bot. Multichill (talk) 15:40, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Multichill (talk) 15:43, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
