You're welcome inside the wiki data community! Wikidata is not a textual wiki. It's made of short statements called properties (P) on elements (Q).

Like for example Earth (Q2) is instance of (P31): inner planet of the Solar System (Q3504248).

So a page is a concept and its description fragmented in some sentences like the previous one.

Another thing I can tell you is that Wikidata is glue. It glues together all the international projects. In wikidata, Mr. Potato Head (Q549344) is just one and links to en wiki page, it wiki page and so on.

There are many way to become useful for the community. :-)

The first step I suggest is to open a random element. You'll find maybe some incomplete information that you could add, for example the label or description.

A useful contribution would be to translate some page or review existing translations if you know other languages.

Still confused about the purpose to add statements to items? You could play with queries. It's a powerful tool for researchers or people with curiosity or great ideas!

Then the wikidata world goes on, but I'm not too expert and don't want to spoiler it...
