  • Registration The event is free but you will need to register via Eventbrite. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wikidata-zurich-hackathon-2019-tickets-73101206677?aff=ebdssbdestsearch
  • Languages English and German.
  • Documentation The materials of the Wikidata ZH Training event have been published here.
  • How will the hackathon work? During the hackathon you will have the opportunity to form a team with other participants who are interested in the same topic and work all together on an idea.
    • Teams Diversity is a key factor for success and an inspiring atmosphere: you might have someone who is more the front-end coder, someone who is the database master, someone who is very good at geographical data analysis, someone who is maybe not coding much but is very good at designing infographics or user interfaces.
    • Data The hackathon is themed around Wikidata, but there are a lot of other data sources that you might want to consider in conjunction with Wikidata, for example the open data of the city of Zurich and the open data of the canton of Zurich.
    • Challenges Our hackathons promote collaboration and not competition. We do not have economic rewards or alike. If you would like to have an idea of what people do in such a hackathon, you can see some examples of very interesting challenges in the TWIST Hackdays last year, proposed by various data providers (not only Wikidata people) here.

During the Wikidata ZH hackathon you can code, for example:

  • tools for Wikidata editors,
  • data visualizations analyzing the content or dynamics of Wikidata
  • a bot, an app or Web site that consumes Wikidata via e.g., SPARQL and satisfies some specific needs of certain users (e.g., tourists, Zurich citizens, foodies …)
  • anything you feel like creating.

See the slides Here

We typically provide a set of challenges. These challenges are a starting point for your own ideas and creativity. We try to formulate the idea in terms of (i) the problem and (ii) what we wish it existed (as users). If you have your own ideas, we are more than happy to provide assistance on that! You are free to chose what to work on during the hackathon. The most important thing is that we all share knowledge, build some useful prototypes and enjoy the event together.
