- Motivation
This is an online update to the widely used book by N.R. Ker, Medieval Libraries of Great Britain: A List of Surviving Books. In theory, it should be possible to use a bot to link these to the relevant entries for the monastery. AndrewNJ (talk) 12:32, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- Discussion
- Support however I'm wondering if in the case of a book that has several copies in different locations we might end up with multiple id's on a single wikidata item? Or should each copy have its own item which would then have this id? ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:37, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you! It's an interesting question. The focus on the MLGB3 database is on manuscripts much more than printed books, but there are likely some cases where this will come up. (I assume we're both talking about book (Q571) as referring to a specific manifestation of a book, as opposed to work (Q386724).) I'm not sure there are any items in Wikidata right now referring to specific copies of printed books, so I am guessing that it would be most straightforward to allow multiple IDs in such cases, but I do not have a strong opinion on this. The key question is whether there might be any reason in the future to integrate the English Short Title Catalogue (Q1342864) and the Incunabula Short Title Catalogue (Q634670) on a per-copy basis. - It's not a major issue as we do have other cases of multiple external ids on a single wikidata item (the significant problem is the reverse, where the same identifier is on separate items, which hopefully won't happen in this case). I was just curious how this would work in practice for books. ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:00, 17 February 2017 (UTC)
