Motivation edit

The current Wikidata property that includes this is sponsor (P859) which mixes funding with endorsement. Organizations that fund research or provide grants do not include endorsement of the results, which is something that makes the term sponsor problematic when involving government or nonprofit foundation fiscal support. Additionally, in grant language, such as with clinical trials, sponsor has a controlled usage and does not include the funder of the research itself. FULBERT (talk) 13:47, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion edit

I looked for other comparable properties in addition to sponsor (P859) and found funding scheme (P6195), assets under management (P4103), and price (P2284). "Funder" is different from all of these. The closest relationship is "sponsor" but this is different. A common situation is that a government will fund a university to do a project, and then the university will sponsor the project. In that situation, the government has little interaction except to provide money, and the university provides institutional support in a sponsor relationship but is not the funder. I want this property for Wikidata:WikiProject Clinical Trials in which 300,000 items have a ClinicalTrials.gov ID (P3098) and typically have both a funder and a sponsor.   Support A funder's identity is often one of the first things someone wants to know about a research project. It's important for giving credit as well as for understanding incentives that might be behind the research. I have not been able to find a property in wikidata that unambiguously defines a funder. As Blue Rasberry noted above, a clinical trial often has a sponsor who is different from the funder. It seems important to make this distinction, so I support this property proposal. I know what you mean ArthurPSmith, and the broad strokes that are currently captured in "sponsor" generally refer to "endorsed by" or "sponsored by" which are more consistent with sponsor (Q152478) as "commercial supporter of an event, activity, or person." This is not generally how grant funding for research or scientific funding works, as the notion of endorsement is often the opposite of what the funding implies. This proposal for "funder" is intended to remove this potential conflict of what is really intended and be more precise based on the expected relationship of funders such as government grant funding or foundation funding. --- FULBERT (talk) 12:50, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I tend to agree with Arthur. Isn't it frequent that even commercial sponsor tend to NOT endorse whatever they fund beyond the funding? --- Jura 13:16, 24 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This speaks to me why we need to not lump all funding and endorsements together, as that lacks precision when dealing with foundational or clinical trial funding, Jura, and why adding Funder as something separate can be helpful when there are clear differences in relationships between the one who provides funding and the one who receives it. As it exists in Wikidata now, many funders will balk at calling their research grants they award as sponsorships, as that would raise conflicts on many levels. --- FULBERT (talk) 19:39, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe we just need to change the label of P859. --- Jura 10:05, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Support I think that having a property that more precisely conveys the meaning of funding apart from endorsement is important. I can anticipate that this term would be widely used to link research studies and possibly also grants received to their funders Baskaufs (talk) 23:15, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  Support I support this williamhoos

Support This property is necessary to be able to distinguish between funder and sponsor.Amywestermann (talk) 23:10, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Support this is much needed considering WMF is also a funder :-) Zblace (talk) 17:24, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jura That is possible, though at this time I am focusing on the need for funder. Thank you. --- FULBERT (talk) 01:44, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • yeah, I understand, but the risk (for the project) is that if we create this, "sponsor" becomes a mix between what it is now (also "funder") and "research sponsor". --- Jura 12:15, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
