Some journals, particular French ones from the late 19th century up to the 50s, are divided in "séries" that serve not to separate topics (as is the case with Bulletin of the National Science Museum, Series B (Q21385861) and Bulletin of the National Science Museum. Series A: Zoology (Q21385856)), but merely to reset the volume numbers. These series are almost never (I know of no such case unless they correspond to a title change, like Bulletin de la Société Botanique de Genève (Q5735486), which is also series 2 of Bulletin des travaux de la Société botanique de Genève (Q51451300)) considered separate publications by database (if we create separate items, it will wreck havoc with constraints on properties like ISSN (P236) and IPNI publication ID (P2008)), but are generally needed for a full bibliographic reference. Oppose I don't see how this would usefully be used. Separate items is better - regarding the ISSN, if only a single one was provided for both series, then there should be a top overarching item that covers both, to which the ISSN would be attached. I think more common though would be separate ISSN's for each of the series, which suggests they really should be separate items. ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:27, 30 January 2019 (UTC)
