- Motivation
Pregnancy categories are a formal classification of drugs based on risk to pregnancy (e.g. risk of birth defects or other harm to the fetus). There are at least two systems for doing this, the US system and the Australian system, both of which are given by English Wikipedia drug infoboxes. As to other countries – some appear to just use the US system, others run their own – e.g. there is a separate German system mentioned by both English Wikipedia and German Wikipedia, although I can't find any use of the German system on individual drug articles in German Wikipedia – in any event, hopefully the way this property is specified is generic enough to handle any other country's systems as well.SJK (talk) 20:52, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
Comment I should note, for full disclosure, that the current US system of pregnancy categories is being phased out by the FDA, in favour of a free-form textual description of the pregnancy risks associated with each drug. I don't think that is a reason not to create this property, since (1) as far as I am aware the Australian system is not being phased out (2) given the American system is being phased out, it is still valid for drugs to which the pregnancy category is assigned, it is just that newly approved drugs will get a free-form textual description instead of a category (3) while a categorisation (as in the current Australian system and the being-phased-out US system) is suitable to become a Wikidata property, the same cannot be said for the free-form text in the new US system.
