Motivation

Scoresway is a website with a database of players, matches, managers, etc for a wide variety of sources. It is by the same people who run the Soccerway website, and the identifiers for Scoresway are the numerical part from the identifiers from Soccerway, which we currently use for Soccerway person ID (P2369). For example, David Beckham is david-beckham/182 at Soccerway, and 182 at scoresway. I think this would be a better property and website for a number of reasons:

  1. It is simpler to use, as it's just a number.
  2. It is easier to identify duplicates, as the text part of the identifier is apparently ignored, so we could have two people with the same number, but with different text part.
  3. The constraints are much simpler.
  4. Scoresway seems to display both manager and player career histories for those who have been both, whereas Soccerway only seems to display their history in their current role. For example [1], [2] are the profiles of Gary Neville, but Soccerway has nothing on his playing career.

I think we will need to retain Soccerway person ID (P2369) as some templates now import the identifiers into wikipedias, and it is well established, but this property could help to identify duplicates, and allow wikipedias to transition to Scoresway if they want, without disrupting wikipedias (or other websites) that already use the existing property. They could also use this property to link to Soccerway, by just using a generic identifier (player/182, for David Beckham, for example). Even if all the wikipedias decide to adopt Scoresway, that could only happen in the long term, as a lot of templates would have to be changed over.

This proposal is based in part on a conversation at Property_talk:P2369 with User:Edgars2007, User:Mbch331 and User:Jon_Harald_Søby, who might be interested in this proposal. Silverfish (talk) 14:21, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
