AudeBot edit
AudeBot (talk • contribs • new items • new lexemes • SUL • Block log • User rights log • User rights • xtools)
Operator: Aude (talk • contribs • logs)
Task/s: My bot will add claims for geocoordinates and related claims.
Function details: The bot will add claims for geocoordinates and related claims, such as GND main type (Property:P107), country (Property:P17) and is in the administrative unit (Property:P131). I am currently getting the data from English Wikipedia. My bot will initially focus on Canada, the US, and perhaps other regions like parts of Africa. My bot script is written in php and also adds a source for each claim. (although wonder if a source is appropriate for GND?) --Aude (talk) 03:22, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Cool. Can you do a test run (~250 edits)? For all claims you add, you should use imported from Wikimedia project (P143)-->English Wikipedia (Q328) for a source. Legoktm (talk) 03:33, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes I can do that. Right now it runs supervised. Aude (talk) 03:54, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Alright, it's done. Aude (talk) 05:01, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- By the way, (if not obvious), the bot checks if the property is already in the item and skips over the property to avoid duplicate claims. It also uses assert=user to make sure it's always logged in. Aude (talk) 07:36, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- NO: @Legoktm since when do we have to source property P107 (P107) ? And property is a wikidata parameter so this is few chance than any wikipedia have a source about GND main type. @Aude, for sourcing use Help:Sources or nothing and avoid to use property imported from Wikimedia project (P143): this property will be deprecated in a near future, see Wikidata:Requests for comment/Sourcing requirements for bots. - I am not sure there is consensus yet about p143? I think not giving a source is not an option. Once we come to consensus about p143, then my bot can do whatever the recommended way is at that point. For imported from Wikimedia project (P143), I can omit the source as I agree with you.
- Regarding using Wikipedia as a source, I'm using the data in the geodata table(s). It's a useful starting point, and should be supplemented with additional sources (e.g. US census) when possible. For stuff like "shares border with", I would definitely use the government geodata and can put the database name and record ids as sources. Aude (talk) 05:00, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- And please note in some cases, government data is not such good quality. For example, I would strongly recommend against getting coordinate data from http://geonames.usgs.gov/domestic/. It's been imported into OpenStreetMap and much of it it is poor quality, points off by a bit, has required a lot of cleanup by the OSM community, etc. In the same way, I think the geocoordinates in Wikipedia have been improved over time by the community to correct for poor data, and think it's valuable to have in Wikidata (amongst other sources also) Aude (talk) 05:24, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
