sorting problem

I found the problem in Translations:Help:Qualifiers/33/fa, it was a missing {{ll}} in a template. So the template included the whole linked page instead of providing only the link in local language. This mixed up the whole layout. Please update the Translations:Help:Qualifiers/33/fa to position the template. be aware that in the translation of the title Help:Qualifiers the namespace Help: must be kept in all languages and translations, so I set it back to english--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 11:16, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

new Main page

Hello translators, @Bene*: As you may already know, I've recently been working on an update to the Main page; I am hoping to launch this page in the next two weeks. I wanted to coordinate in advance the translation of this new content—I am happy to update the page so it includes links in the format of {{Ll|Namespace:Page}} instead of [[Namespace:Page]] but would like to know what else I can do to assist the process. Apart from the "Discover" section which will occasionally feature new content, the page is not expected to change that much or that frequently so there should not be too many translations of content for various languages required after launch.

Just an FYI, Base suggested using the Extension:Translate (like it has been used on all Help pages) here. There has also been some discussions about how to best treat the big box containing all languages (which right now occupies a lot of important real estate at the top of the Main page). Bene* and Lydia have suggested partially hiding this box using CSS (so that only a few language links are displayed), and then relying on the ULS to display the right language for a user. If anyone has other suggestions or ideas for implementation and could volunteer to help with this task, that would be appreciated.

One last thing—the Main page draft is still being updated so please do not go ahead with translations yet.

The page looks very nice. For translation the translation extension is the best choice. Once the main page is translated, it is possible to remove the translation extension from all or only some languages in order to prevent accidental or malicious changes. There are several ways to deal with the box. One is to hide it behind a button "Other Languages". I suggest to show the box only to unregistered users and to show registered users a smaller box with the languages of the user preferences + the top twenty languages and hide the rest somehow. It is also possible to use smaller fonts to reduce the size of the box.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 20:26, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

A symbol of the globe as a button opens up an interactive map of the World with links to the different languages, the map can have any size. Another button "Other Languages A-Z" opens the window to an alphabetical list of languages. The symbols must be self declaring so users in any language might find their own languages, even if they don´t know the latin alphabet. Just imagine the main page beeing written in Chinese or Hindi.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 14:33, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Transclusions and translations

Hello,
A request was made to have all the sections of the new Main page transcluded. I'm not quite sure how this interferes with translation mark-up and my first attempt at adding translation tags to a transcluded page added in badness (meaning <translate> tags were then visible on the Main page). Using noinclude tags didn't help. To prevent this from happening again, could someone let me know the process for doing this correctly? For reference, these are the following transcluded pages needing to be marked up for translation:

@Thepwnco: the first thing is to mark the subpages for translation, like John F. Lewis did for Wikidata:Main_Page/Banner. After this you can transclude {{Wikidata:Main_Page/Banner/en}} for English version (and not {{Wikidata:Main_Page/Banner}}), like {{Wikidata:Main_Page/Banner/fr}} in French main page. Maybe it's also possible to create a single main page with the use of the variable {{int:Lang}}.

@Thepwnco, Beta16: Right now, the Main Page's translation system is kinda messed up; a combination of the traditional translation system and the Translate extension system. We need to use one translation system. That is, using the Translate extension for translating the Main Page. incubator: currently uses this system. This would allow us to have one single format for the Main Page in all language versions, instead of having different versions of the Main Page for every language. Also, the black header at the top cannot be easily translated on-wiki because it is an image. It is possible to position text on an image using CSS; using this would make translating the text bits on the image easier. I personally do not like the dark header much: would it be possible to have another light-themed header? Also instead of keeping the language box at the top, I think it would be better if we have it at the bottom. What do others think? Cheers, --Glaisher [talk] 17:52, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

The problems are pictures containing text. The banner contains words like "free", "open", "multilingual" that can not be translated by the translation extension. We´d need 200 Versions of the banner in every language.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 18:11, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
