The Art in the Christian Tradition (ACT) database is a collection of approximately 7000 images that illustrates the variety of artwork representing the practice of Christianity from the first century CE to the present. The database is maintained by the Vanderbilt Divinity Library, a division of the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries of Vanderbilt University and serves as an image source for the popular Revised Common Lectionary website. Images have been collected from a variety of sources and may all be used for non-commercial use with attribution.
The goal of this project is to increase access and discoverability of images in the collection by creating or improving Wikidata items for all works in the ACT database, and to upload images into Wikimedia Commons if permitted by their license. In 2021, we used the property we proposed, Art in the Christian Tradition ID (P9092), to link existing Wikidata items to their appropriate records in the database. From 2021 to 2022, we created new Wikidata items for Commons images that were featured in ACT, but which did not yet have Wikidata items.
In 2023, we uploaded to Commons about 900 images that were donated to the collection by Anne Richardson and Jim Womack and created Wikidata items for them. These photos primarily depict artwork in or on European cathedrals, or ancient Christian artifacts displayed in museums. They also include plates from the Macklin Bible "the most impressive Bible ever printed", a copy of which is housed in the Vanderbilt Libraries' Special Collections and University Archives. Our current efforts are focused on improving the quality of the metadata in Wikidata associated with the collection to make the images more findable. This will include the relationship between particular scripture verses and images that depict them.
