What is a Datathon? edit

In general, a datathon is an event that brings together data specialists over few days to work collaboratively on an issue.

For this particular cultural venues datathon, participants will work together in a relaxed and informal session to populate Wikidata with venue information. Participants will be supervised and supported by facilitators to make the activity as easy and productive as possible for everyone. This will not be a competition, but rather a collective effort in which everyone can contribute according to their skills and time. No previous Wikidata experience will be required. This (Wiki)Datathon is intended to be a unifying activity that supports the overall goals of this Wikiproject.

Aim and Scope edit

The Cultural venues datathon serves following goals:

  • support the practical learning of the whole community through guided editing sessions open to anyone;
  • increase the number of Wikidata items about cultural buildings, with a focus on performing arts buildings;
  • increase the quality of data about cultural buildings.

Background edit

Cultural venues are an important part of the performing arts ecosystem. Theatres, concert halls, black boxes, music venues: these purpose-built facilities offer optimal conditions for audiences to attend live performances.

It’s important then, to make sure that these venues as well as the performances that take place within them are described with precision and accuracy by the entire ecosystem that revolves around these places and spaces. In order to meet the objective of creating the most complete and high quality database on performing arts buildings and spaces – jazz clubs, dance theatres, opera houses, performing arts centres, etc. – we invite the community to gather in an online datathon to enrich the quantity and quality of data related to cultural venues.
