Aim and Scope edit

The aim of the present project is to create the world’s most complete high quality database of performing arts productions, literary and artistic works related to the performing arts (theatre plays, musical compositions, choreographic works), performing arts companies, and performing arts professionals. The data is quite naturally related to the data about cultural venues (such as theatres, opera houses, or open-air stages) and to the data about cultural events (such as theatre or dance festivals, competitions, etc.). These data are the object of separate, but complementary WikiProjects.

This WikiProject covers all genres of the performing arts (including theatre, dance, cabaret, and music performances) and is intended to eventually supersede the WikiProject Theatre that preceded it, but is slightly narrower in scope. It also covers the artefacts that are typically collected by heritage institutions in relation to performing arts productions, documenting their conception, their realization, and their reception to the extent that the modelling of these artefacts is not already covered by other WikiProjects.

The project more specifically serves to coordinate the following activities:

  • the creation of an inventory of all existing public databases that contain data about performing arts productions, literary and artistic works related to the performing arts, as well as organizations and people active in the field of performing arts;
  • the implementation and maintenance of ontologies and multilingual thesauri relating to the performing arts;
  • the documentation of recommended properties, recommended values and usage instructions for Wikidata performing arts items;
  • the ingestion of data about performing arts productions into Wikidata;
  • the enhancement and completion of such data;
  • the use of the data to create maintenance lists on Wikipedia;
  • the inclusion of the data into Wikipedia and its sister projects, such as in infoboxes or lists.

Background edit

This project has been launched in 2017 as a side product of a project by the Swiss Theatre Collection and the Swiss Dance Archive (now merged into SAPA Foundation, Swiss Archive of the Performing Arts) in cooperation with the Bern University of Applied Sciences. The two organizations were preparing for the acquisition of a new database solution. As part of that work, a data model was developed that allowed to describe the data of the two institutions, and some of the data was test-migrated to linked data, making it available through a SPARQL endpoint. In parallel, a student at the Bern University of Applied Sciences explored ways to ingest parts of the data also into Wikidata.

This WikiProject was enhanced and translated to French in 2020 as part of a project grant entitled Modelling and Populating Performing Arts Data in Wikidata. It has since been maintained by the Canadian Association for the Performing Arts (CAPACOA), with support from LaCogency and the LODEPA community.

Ways to Contribute edit

There are several ways you can contribute to the project:

  • List databases containing data about performing arts productions, literary and artistic works related to the performing arts, performing arts companies, and performing arts professionals on the Data Sources page. In case the databases are not publicly accessible, contact the data holder in order to encourage them to release the data to the public (under a CC-0 Waiver or equivalent).
  • Create Wikidata items for the databases about performing arts productions, literary and artistic works related to the performing arts, performing arts companies, and performing arts professionals (= data sources for the data ingestion)
  • Clean existing Wikidata items so that they conform to the data modelling guidelines laid out in the Data Structure section.
  • Help improving the ontologies and multilingual thesauri (see Data Structure section) needed for the ingestion and proper representation of the data.
  • Ingest existing databases containing data about performing arts productions, literary and artistic works related to the performing arts, performing arts companies and performing arts professionals into Wikidata.
  • Tidy up the data after batch ingestion.
  • Help improving the quality and completeness of the data.
  • Add links to related projects on Wikipedia; draw their contributors' attention to this project page.
  • Develop and implement use cases for the data (e.g. by creating maintenance lists for Wikipedia, by including the data in infoboxes or lists on Wikipedia, etc.).
  • Help writing step-by-step guidelines for the various tasks.
