NIEA building ID issues

edit

I wish to discuss some issue around NIEA building ID (P1460) and related properties including its absence from some Wikidata items and some Wikidata items to which it applies not being present at all. This information is both a resource for SparSQL queries to answer for example: Give a list of the Grade B1 listed buildings in County Armagh and also as a source for the Monumental application for Wiki Loves Mounments. -- Deirge Ó Dhaoinebeaga(a)talk 12:55, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Background

edit

To my best understanding (possibly incorrect) it is the Northern Ireland Department for Communities (NIDfC) responsible NIEA Building ID maintenance. They, like England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland use their own Historic Environment Viewer, an esri map-based tool which is backed by a database useful particularly easy for identifying entities by zooming in on a map and clicking extract information. It is seems more difficult to intuitively feed an identifier in and understanding the concept of layers, though the web was able to [fix] the associated Irish Sites and Monuments Record ID (P4057) for the Republic of Ireland, with for Dalkey Castle (Q30970161) clicking its value link DU023-023010- showing how things could/should work. -- Deirge Ó Dhaoinebeaga(a)talk 12:55, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Case studies and examples

These have been driven by Photographs released by NLI to flickr commons: -- Deirge Ó Dhaoinebeaga(a)talk 12:55, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

This is complex because there is an ambigously name The "Milford House" back at 3 Victoria Street, Armagh is Monumental and Trustee Savings Bank (Q17861303) exist for 1 Victoria St. Armagh but checking the NIDfC map view for the location (you will need to zoom in and locate) shows a list not only for the museum NIDfC db entry for HB15/17/061 A (Grade B) 3 Victoria Street but a number of other locations nearby also.

Improvements needed

edit

There are a number of improvements that are needed, but it may not be as simple as presented here which might need refinement: --

Adding NIEA building IDs and map data would be a big improvement. An active feed which reflects changes in the NIEA dataset would be ideal, but probably a technical challenge. There may be smart ways of doing that, but the data imports I can think of work from a snapshot of data. Often that's fine, but with something like this there would be periodic updates needed as buildings are added or removed from the list.
