Merging and de-duplication
edit- discussion needed
Examples: should different register entries be merged onto the same item ?
edit- Listed buildings + scheduled monuments ? -- eg Bradgate House (Q16985100) , Potter Heigham Bridge (Q17556349) , Old Scotney Castle (Q17530343)
- I think the two should be merged as the wikidata item can have separate statements which cover both listing status and scheduled monument status. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 12:56, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
- Bridges etc that cross between different districts / counties ? -- eg Battersea Bridge (Q810945) , Battersea Railway Bridge (Q507367)
- I think the two should be merged as the wikidata item can have separate statements which cover both listing listing entries. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 12:56, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
- Multiple features on the same site ? (eg building + gate + chapel + ...) -- eg Brocket Hall (Q2663758) , Benham Park (Q15198400) , St Bartholomew's Church, Chipping (Q15979318)
- I would be tempted to leave them separate but make sure that a link is established between the two. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 12:56, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
- Item for listed thing vs general item for site ? -- eg Hambledon Hill (Q17650608) vs Hambledon Hill (Q5644220)
- Yesterday I was using Template:Wikidata list on en.wp to generate a list of hill forts in England. In a couple of cases, sites were effectively listed twice where there was one Wikidata item for the archaeological site and one for the hill which it is a part of. This seemed to derive from Wikipedia articles where the archaeological site was mentioned. I think it makes sense to have separate entries for individual sites and wider areas, so one entry for the hill and one for the hill fort. They still need to be linked so I part of (P361) to link the two, eg Compton Dundon (Q2920303) and Dundon Hill Hillfort (Q5314880) . Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 12:56, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
- Buildings and current (or former) uses e.g. The Old Sessions House (Q26513668) and Museum of Lancashire (Q6940916) - should these be merged or have separate pages? Peter James (talk) 18:27, 20 September 2017 (UTC)
- Another of these: St Ignatius Church, Preston (Q17532150) closed a few years ago and the building was taken over by another church, and is now the Syro-Malabar Cathedral of St. Alphonsa, Preston (St Ignatius Church, Preston (Q7593392) ). City Mosque Preston (Q16884358) is now City Mosque; the church still exists but has moved from that building. Peter James (talk) 20:42, 20 September 2017 (UTC)
Properties
editSome qualifiers that might be useful on merged items, with searches to items demonstrating them
editmost common qualifiers for property National Heritage List for England number (P1216)
- heritage designation (P1435) -- to distinguish different types of listing --
tinyurl.com/po99mo8
- P794 (P794) -- alternative, to distinguish different types of listing --
tinyurl.com/q33nma2
- located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) -- to distinguish different listings across boundaries --
tinyurl.com/ptks6pk
- applies to part (P518) -- to otherwise indicate different parts --
tinyurl.com/pcbr98t
- official name (P1448) -- to supply names from listing sheet
Useful properties for connecting between different unmerged items
edit- part of (P361) / has part(s) (P527) -- ? a Commons cat for a structure might include templated links for any listed 'part' of the overall structure
- location (P276) -- perhaps a looser relationship, indicating that an item was merely located in a more general area (use located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) for the district, civil parish, etc)
Principles
edit- Should a higher-level listed feature in a lower listed surrounding always have a separate item (eg Grade I gates, in a II* complex?)
- -- always a specific item for all Grade I features ?
- -- but always combine Grade II (unstarred) into an encompassing item ?
- Should scheduled iron-age hill forts generally have a different item to the hill they may almost entirely comprise ?
- -- should the hill also get a heritage designation (P1435) statement and National Heritage List for England number (P1216) link ??

Some things to do
editAdd Commons category (P373) based on templates on Commons category pagesdone- Identify merge candidates (see above); remove any inappropriate Commons cats
- Better labels (use Commonscats ?)
- Try to add instance of (P31)s based on names, Commons supercats
- Add located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) based on Commons supercats (some P131s that do exist may be also be very general)
- Examine Commons cats of current image (P18) targets, to try to find more Commons category (P373)s ?
- Add
named after (P138)dedicated to (P825) statements for churches
