Although current formatter URL is fine and works, I think it would be better to use direct link: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/$1.shtml. And fix regex to [a-z]/[a-z]{4,7}\d{2} (I'm not sure, whether there can be two letters before slash). That is the format, that enwiki uses at baseballstats template. --Edgars2007 (talk) 12:37, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
