    Explanations [Edit]

This property shows the number of seasons a television or radio series has had. It should always be a numerical value, without other symbols or indications. It's possible to add qualifiers, such as point in time and criterion used, or references.

    Series in production edit

The number of season should be qualified:

If there are several values for the same criterion used (P1013), the most recent one should get preferred rank.

    Series that ended edit

In general, only the total number of seasons is stored.

If there are several ways of counting this, there may be multiple values in rare cases.

    Items for seasons edit

Items for series sometimes list items for each season with has part(s) (P527). This can provide further information.

    Discussion edit

    Extend to radio? edit

I'd like to use this property for radio programmes (such as Great Lives (Q5599518)), and suggest extending the scope of the property to cover that. Frankieroberto (talk) 21:30, 4 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

    Usage instructions edit

Hello everyone. I created the help page for this property ("Explanations" section above) trying to reflect one of the most common current usage in wikidata and comparable policies about television infoboxes in local editions of Wikipedia. So, for shows still in production, I thought the best "common policy" for Wikidata is to wait until the season premiere before updating the value, or at least the release of the new season is imminent (up to a week before, a limit conventionally used on it.wikipedia). If you don't agree or have suggestions to improve the help page please leave a message here. I would have used a template to mark it as a draft but I'm not sure if it exists on wikidata. Anyway, it's important we have a common policy if we're going to heavily use the property in wikipedia. I'm going to notify about this discussion local projects that use the property and some of the main editions of wikipedia. --Supernino (talk) 06:43, 9 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

At Wikidata, we generally don't "update" values. New ones just get added. Normally, the "point in time" qualifier should show when it was current.

I revised it to make it more readable and detail the "criterion used" part. Once a series entirely produced, I think only the final total should have preferred rank (and is probably the only one worth including).

Could be extended to Sport seasons ? edit

@Jura1,@Pigsonthewing I know the definition scope. But I don't see the problem to extend its use to sports season (Q27020041), because the "basic concept" is the same. Which other property should be used to "number of seasons for a competition", instead ?. Thanks, Amadalvarez (talk) 06:16, 21 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

The terms may be comparable in English, but what about other languages? And what about the underlying concepts? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:14, 21 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
