Mr. Carlebach was born in Lübeck, Germany, the son of a banker. He studied at the Berlin and Hamburg Universities and the University of Vienna, specializing in ethnology and his‐ tory. When his schooling was completed, he entered the antique business.Mr. Carlebach fled from the Hitler regime in 1937, arriving in New York that year. He opened his own gallery here in 1939. (English)

Juilis Carlebach, president of Carlebach Galleries, Inc., of 1040 Madison Avenue, died yesterday of a heart attack at the gallery. He lived at 605 East 82d Street. He was 55 years old.Mr. Carlebach specialized in primitive and ancient art and helped many museums and private collectors select items for their exhibits and collections.Among the many companies he helped in preparing exhibits of historic and antique items were the Singer Sewing Machine Company, Remington Rand, Lord & Taylor, Gimbels, Bonwit‐Teller and The New York Times.
