The Miskito people of eastern Nicaragua and Honduras had leaders called “kings” from about 1633 to 1860. From 1860 to 1894 similar leaders held the official title of hereditary chiefs, although the Miskito themselves continued to refer to them as “kings.” These leaders never ruled a state-type political structure. Nevertheless, in this article we use the loan word “king,” since it is used both throughout the historical literature to describe these leaders and by the Miskito themselves today. (English)
