Project Background, Aim and Scope

edit

The Städel Museum has more than 24,000 works of art in the public domain (i.e., works of art no longer under copyright protection) and has made them available for download free of charge via the Digital Collection. These images are in the public domain and may be downloaded, edited, remixed, shared, reproduced in any format, and used for any purpose. The aim of this service is to make the Städel collection available to the public and to promote the public enjoyment of shared cultural assets.

After the Städel Museum has already carried out several individual uploads to Wikimedia, we decided, in exchange with Wikimedia Deutschland, to carry out a publicly documented collective upload of some highlight works from our collection within the framework of this WikiProject. The aim of the project is therefore to

  • achieve an easier maintenance of the metadata by modeling the object metadata on Wikidata and linking the Wikidata items to the files on Wikimedia Commons
  • provide a publicly accessible and visible basis for future uploads
  • create an example of how to use our API that other users can build upon
  • to disclose our motivation and document progress.

Resources, Licences and Disclaimer

edit

The works selected are the highlight works included in the publication Städel Museum: 700 Jahre Kunst. Auf die Hand. Wienand Verlag, Köln. 2018, with the exception of the works from the Contemporary Art Collection. We appreciate the use of our data model, i.e. the structure of the items and properties, for future uploads.

Please note: The uploaded data was last updated on XX.XX.XXXX.

Current data can be found in the Digital Collection of the Städel at any time and accessed via the OAI interface of the Digital Collection.

The Städel Museum uses the OAI (Open Archives Initiative) interface for data interchange and synchronization. The metadata is regularly updated and can be viewed or harvested. The interface features two different metadata formats: first, a significantly reduced compressed format to assist in identifying the objects with Dublin Core, and, second, LIDO (Lightweight Information Describing Objects) for descriptive metadata. The metadata is available under the license CC0 1.0.
