This workshop was the first event of the Historical Bibliographic Data initiative to get the conversation going between people in the Wiki communities and/or in academia and/or in the GLAM sector about how to model them.

Welcome

edit
  • This is how the tech works
  • We're here to discuss edge cases in historical bibliographic data to document ways of making them fit the Wikidata data models
  • We're bringing together people from a variety of backgrounds, some that will be more familiar with the data we're talking about, some that will be more familiar with the technical side, some who might just be observing
  • Make friends! We're hoping to spark a conversation that will keep going
  • We will split into 3 groups facilitated by Demian, Simon, and Marie to:
    • familiarize ourselves with the WikiProject Books and WikiProject Periodicals data models
    • discuss edge cases that can come from your own data (but don't worry, we have back ups of our own)
    • document these use cases for the data models
    • post the documentation we've come up with on a subpage of the relevant WikiProject
  • The 3 groups will be talking about:
    • translations (Simon)
    • series of works (Demian)
    • works serialized in installments (Marie)
  • Then we'll come back in the larger group to:
    • hear about the Wikidata communication channels
    • discuss how we want to keep the conversation going
    • announce relevant upcoming events related to our personal projects
  • Letting people know what they're getting into

Check-in

edit

Typing into the chat and waiting to press Enter all at once:

  • What type of books or periodicals do you work on?

Have a look at the names associated with your own areas of interest, you might end up in the same group, otherwise make sure to grab their contact information at the end!

  • Getting people engaged
  • Getting a first flavour of the range of interests

Splitting into groups

edit

As each facilitator introduces himself or herself and their group's topic, have a think about which type of data you want to discuss.

  • Simon: translations
  • Demian: series of works
  • Marie: serialized works

If there is anyone who is familiar with Wikidata technology and infrastructure and not particularly bothered about which type of data you discuss, could you identify yourself as a techie in the chat? We'd like to ensure each group has enough techies.

When everyone's in their breakout room

  • Introduce yourselves
  • Setting up the rest of the workshop to ensure good conversations with a diversity of point of views

Learning about the data models

edit

or

  • Facilitator presents the relevant data model(s)

The facilitator can answer questions or facilitate a Q&A within the group

  • Getting to know each other
  • Familiarizing ourselves with the data models
Unanswered questions can go on the WikiProject Talk pages

Documenting use cases

edit

The facilitator presents a subpage from a WikiProject with a variety of use cases documenting issues and solutions.

  • Do you have examples from your own data you'd like us to discuss?

If nobody does, the facilitator presents theirs.

In an Etherpad:

  • Write down how we'd organize the data with the current data models
  • Discuss properties that might need to be added to accommodate the data
  • Documenting how the data models apply to edge cases
  • Documenting use cases that would require new properties
Multiple Etherpads (transferred to WikiProject subpages in the next activity)

Creating WikiProject subpages

edit

The facilitator asks a techie to volunteer sharing their screen and explaining how to create a subpage for the documentation produced by the group.

  • Learning how to technically create a Wikidata subpage
  • Explaining to scholars interested in adding their data how Wikidata works as a community

Next steps

Presentations by someone from WikiProjects Books and/or Periodicals and Marie

  • The communication channels used by people in WikiProjects Books and Periodicals (someone from WikiProjects Books and/or Periodicals)
  • Linked Pasts stream proposal (Marie)

Open discussion

  • How would you like to keep the conversation going?
  • Any events coming up with your own projects?
  • Getting a sense of how people want to work together
Workshop's dedicated Wikidata subpage (Marie will harvest)

Notes

Etherpad

looking for a connection between Wikisource and Wikidata (Inductiveload)

solution to articles serialized over multiple issues:

User:Peaceray merged The Study of Sociology (Q19100235) and The Study of Sociology (Q105440941)

were also present: Julien Vallières and Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight

Debrief with Demian

  • communication (channels and vocabulary) are the main issues
  • not about how to import all the minutia of our data sets, but how to make them findable (like scholarly articles in Wikicite, like collections in GLAM)
  • maybe our efforts should be under the Wikibase umbrella rather than the Wikicite one?
