Wikidata is a free knowledge base that you can edit! It can be read and edited by humans and machines alike and you can go to any item page now and add to this ever-growing database!

Merging items

Hallo Encycloon,
When you (want to) merge items, you may want to use the merge.js gadget from help page about merging. It helps with merging and removes the need to file a request on Wikidata:Requests for deletions.

nl:Fox (Wabash)

Hi Encycloon,

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but I have removed the coupling with Q5476892 you made for nl:Fox (Wabash) as it seems to refer to another river. Confusingly en:Fox River (Little Wabash tributary) mentions one Fox River in the hat notice, leads with another one – the intended subject – and mentions yet another passingly. The last one, about which only the Dutch Wikipedia seems to have an article, is currently lacking a Wikidata item and I am not sure how to add one. Could you do that, if only to prevent further confusion? — bertux 14:51, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi bertux, I wasn't sure whether this small river was notable on his own (as it hasn't an own article on ENWP). So I thought it wise to couple it with this English Wikipedia-article for the time being. But what you did is also a solution, though improvements are indeed very welcome. Hoi Encycloon, maar even in het Nederlands, ik zet het later misschien wel om in Engels, ben nu te gaar.

De filosofie achter Wikidata is wezenlijk anders dan die achter Wikipedia. De relevantie van een onderwerp is hier nauwelijks een gespreksonderwerp. Niet dat er geen belang aan wordt gehecht, maar gewoonlijk is het voldoende als er minstens een belangwekkende eigenschap in het item vermeld wordt. In de praktijk wordt een item vaak aangemaakt zodra minstens een van de driehonderd Wikipedia's een artikel heeft over het onderwerp.

De systematiek, die op Wikipedia een bijrol speelt, is hier echter van levensbelang en het hele systeem is daarop ingericht. Als je alleen maar braaf Wikipedia-artikelen verbindt aan Wikidata-items, merk je dat niet zo, maar waarden, eigenschappen en relaties worden volgens een heel nauwkeurig uitgewerkt systeem vastgelegd. Met twee verschillende rivieren in één item doorkruis je dat systeem. Zo kan een rivier nooit van twee verschillende rivieren een zijrivier zijn, niet in de werkelijkheid en niet op Wikidata, maar doordat er opeens twee rivieren in een item zaten, werd dat toch nodig.

Je bezwaar dat er nu twee items met dezelfde naam zijn, is dan weer geen probleem. Waar Wikipedia het filosofisch onjuiste en in de praktijk foutgevoelige systeem heeft, dat de naam van een artikel als identifier dient, is het op Wikidata geen probleem als er tientallen of honderden items dezelfde naam dragen: ze hebben immers elk een unieke identifier, de Qxxxxxx-code. De naam is een bijkomstigheid, een van de vele eigenschappen die een item kan hebben, een eigenschap die geen hogere status heeft dan inwonertal, geslacht, zijrivier van, Elo-rating, maximum toerental of wat dan ook.

Je samenvoeging was dan ook in strijd met de ontwerpsystematiek en als je iets dergelijks vaker hebt gedaan, hoop ik dat je je bewerkingen na gaat lopen om de knopen weer te ontwarren.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I live in Turkey under Erdogan, where Wikipedia is banned and blocked since 2017, along thousands of other websites. But interestingly, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons are still not banned and blocked, that is why I made this request in Wikidata. Sarvathi (talk) 18:41, 14 March 2019 (UTC)

I only created this list of Azerbeijan museums, which is sortable by name and place. I don't think 'Museums in Baku' is for the Dutch WP a popular subject (there are scarcely articles about), so this sortable list seems sufficient for the moment.
