Indiana Bridges Workshop 2022 edit

Welcome to the October 2022 Wikidata workshop and edit-a-thon for the Indiana University Libraries, Technical Services Monographic and Image Cataloging Unit. For this project we will be adding and updating entries for Indiana bridges, particularly for the covered bridges represented in the Frank M. Hohenberger Photograph Collection held by IU's Lilly Library, which are available through IU's Image Collections Online. This seemed like a perfect way to celebrate Indiana's 2022 Parke County Covered Bridge Festival!

Goals edit

  • To become familiar with Wikidata and Wikidata editing.
  • To build a deeper understanding of linked data applications.
  • To create URIs for Indiana bridges that we can use in the future when describing IU's collections.

How to prepare edit

Agenda edit

  1. What we will be doing
  2. Discussion of the value of Wikidata
  3. Introduction to Wikidata/Linked data
  4. Examples
  5. Item editing walkthrough
  6. Item creation walkthrough
  7. Next steps and Q&A

Edit-a-thon Orientation edit

Stats tracking edit

We will be using the Wikipedia/Wikidata Dashboard to track our edits for this workshop. Although this may have more bells and whistles than we really need for our current edit-a-thon, it's a popular tool for many Wikidata edit-a-thons and this is a great chance to build familiarity with it.

What items will we be adding/editing? edit

Any Indiana bridge, particularly covered bridges, are fair game, but to get things rolling, we will start with the bridges represented by the Hohenberger photo collection. The list is available as a Google doc at: [TBA]

Description basics edit

Properties edit

The following is a list of potential properties that may be used with bridges. This list is neither intended to be exhaustive nor prescriptive. The properties under each subsection are ordered from the most to the least likely to be relevant within the context of this project and the ones in bold text are strongly recommend if the information is available.

Instance of (P31)

Class of which this subject is a particular example and member; different from P279 (subclass of); for example: K2 is an instance of mountain; volcano is a subclass of mountain (and an instance of volcanic landform). See list of useful qualifiers below.

Spatial - Relative

  • located in the administrative territorial entity [counties, townships, cities, etc.] (P131)
    • The item is located on the territory of the following administrative entity.
    • Use P276 for specifying locations that are non-administrative places and for items about events. Use P1382 if the item falls only partially into the administrative entity. Generally just specify the most granular level.
    • Use instead of location (P276). This is a more general property that can be used to refer to the location of the stapes in the middle ear or the Mona Lisa in the Louvre.
  • country (P17)
  • crosses (P177)
  • street address (P6375)
    • Obstacle (body of water, road, railway...) which this bridge crosses over or this tunnel goes under.
  • historic county (P7959)
  • next crossing downstream (P2674)
    • Next crossing of this river, canal, etc. downstream of this subject.
  • next crossing upstream (P2673)
    • Next crossing of this river, canal, etc. upstream of this subject.
  • located in/on physical feature [other than river] (P706)
    • Located on the specified (geo)physical feature Should not be used when the value is only political/administrative (P131) or a mountain range (P4552)
  • locator map image (P242)
    • Geographic map image which highlights the location of the subject within some larger entity
  • terminus [city, county, township, etc.] (P559)
    • The feature (intersecting road, train station, etc.) at the end of a linear feature

Spatial – Absolute

  • coordinate location (P625)
    • Geocoordinates of the subject For Earth, please note that only WGS84 coordinating system is supported at the moment. Obtainable by right clicking on flag in Google Maps or by manually entering.

Temporal

  • inception (P571)
    • Time when an entity begins to exist for date of official opening use P1619
  • date of official opening (P1619)
  • dissolved, abolished or demolished date Property:P576
  • significant event (P793)
    • Significant or notable events associated with the subject. For instance, you can add construction, reconstruction, structure relocation, etc. with a qualifier for "start time" and "end time" or "calendar date."

Physical description

  • architectural style (P149)
  • made from material (P186)
  • length (P2043)
  • width (P2049)
  • height (P2048)
  • clearance (P2793)
  • color (P462)
    • Distance between surface under bridge and bottom of a bridge deck
  • number of spans (P1314)
  • longest span (P2787)

Creators, Contributors, Etc. Note that the name needs to be set up as its own item in Wikidata before it can be added as a value for the following properties.

  • architect (P84)
  • maintained by (P126)
  • structural engineer (P631)
  • named after (P138)
  • owned by (P127)
  • designed by (P287)

Miscellaneous

  • heritage designation (P1435)
    • Date when the bridge received this designation can be added with the qualifier “Start time.”
  • carries (P2505)
    • Item (e.g. road, railway, canal) carried by a bridge, a tunnel or a mountain pass
  • official website (P856)
  • connects with (P2789)
    • Item with which the item is physically connected
  • described by source (P1343)
    • Work where this item is described
  • present in work (P1441)
    • This (fictional or fictionalized) entity or person appears in that work as part of the narration.

Not clear if this is appropriate based on description as the bridges are not fictional, but have found it used on other records.

Data models edit

A data model is a set of common properties we use to describe things on Wikidata. Data models are not prescriptive. Often the best way to learn how to model items is to look at existing well-modeled items. If you click on your user profile in the upper right corner, then on preferences and then on the gadgets tab, you can check the box for Recoin. This gadget will suggest fields commonly used for the object with the instance type you are creating or editing. Note that even Wikidata's model record for bridges, The Golden Gate Bridge, has suggestions from Recoin for additional fields that may be added, although not all of them may be applicable in a particular instance. The Descriptions gadget is also useful. If this feature is turned on, you can get a description of an item or property by hovering over the linked text.

A data model for architects has been included as you may need to create a record if a person has not already been established in Wikidata.

Bridge data model Golden Gate Bridge (Q44440)

Architect data model Frank Lloyd Wright (Q5604)

Qualifiers edit

The following list of qualifiers is intended to provide examples of what is available in Wikidata. It is neither exhaustive nor prescriptive.

  • Dates
    • start time - time a time period starts
    • end time - time a time period ends
    • nature of statement - can be paired with "circa (approx.)"
    • latest start date - (qualifier) latest date on which the statement could have started to be true
    • earliest end date - (qualifier) earliest date on which the statement could have begun to no longer be true
    • earliest date - earliest date at which an event could have happened. Use as qualifier for other date properties
    • latest date - latest possible time that something could have occurred. Use as qualifier for other date properties
    • point in time - time and date something took place, existed or a statement was true
  • References
    • stated in - Use to link to name of resource (i.e. 1870 United State Census)
    • reference URL - Use to link to an online resource with a URL
    • Wikimedia import URL - Used when information is imported from another Wikimedia project site
    • Various named databases such as Bridgehunter.com ID
    • retrieved (date accessed) - date or point in time that information was retrieved from a database or website (for use in online sources)
  • Miscellaneous
    • statement disputed by
    • reason for deprecated rank

Online Reference sources edit

The following are sources containing information on and related to bridges:

  • Bridge Hunter
  • Bridge Reports
    • Note that it is generally easier to grab the ID number for BridgeReports.com from the relevant record on BridgeHunter.com and most of the information from BridgeReports is ingested into the BridgeHunter record.
  • National Bridge Inventory Number
    • This number is best accessed through Bridge Hunter because the National Bridge Inventory does not have an online database and identifiers must be looked up using a scanned pdf of the print inventory.
  • Indiana State Historic Architectural and Archaeological Database (SHAARD)
    • You can also view information from the Indiana Historical Site Survey Index (IHSSI link) and National Register File (link on Site Assessment tab). Once you are in the NR record, the pdf tab will have scans of the submitted nomination form, which generally includes biographical information for those involved with building the bridge.
  • GeoNames
    • Searching on Indiana Bridge should pull up an extensive list, but you can also search by bridge name.
  • National Register of Historic Places
  • Open Street Map
    • May contain larger Indiana bridges. Be mindful of category designations (e.g., foot path vs. cycle path vs. bridge with the same name and location).
  • Parke County covered bride site
