modelling monuments in NRW

Hi Multichill … hope you are fine! After working on some minor projects like this or this, I'm in the mood for modeling cultural heritage monuments in North Rhine Westphalia for Wikidata … as you might remember, they have IDs on a municipality level, still no centralized unique ID in sight (denkmal.nrw exists, but is more or less dormant or has been moving on a very slow speed for years).

So, after a discussion approach on Wikidata talk:WikiProject Bau- und Kulturdenkmale#Modellierung I'm a bit stuck – there is an idea, but I'd need a sparring partner for thinking around who is familiar with this mess and Wikidata ;-) How to model a local monument with local ID in a state with 396 municipalities? I thought I could find something at the municipal monument in the Netherlands (Q2650048), but there don't seem to be any IDs in Wikidata for them.

What are our options?

  1. 396 new properties for each municipality – ehm, no (?)
  2. creating a combined ID with Community Identification Number (Q23003) – we had this discussion 10 years ago, I don't find it feasible for "normal users", it's OR, needs permanent monitoring, is incompatible with Wikipedia lists, hard to reconcile etc.
  3. Apart from heritage designation (P1435) = architectural heritage monument in North Rhine-Westphalia (Q15632117) or Bodendenkmal (Q39422749): Using inventory number (P217) with collection (P195) as qualifier, where collection (P195) would be the local official monuments list, one item per municipality. I like the structure, but not really using collection (P195) for the monuments list, semantically. Is a local list a „collection“? Another qualifier in this model would be start time (P580).

What do you think? Can you remember a comparable example on international level? I checked out some of the properties, but no success so far. I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks! --Elya (talk) 16:13, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

@Elya: fine given the circumstances. I hope you're doing well too! I would go for the catalog approach. So basically your option three, but create a registry (catalog) item for each municipality that has a registry. On the item you can use catalog code (P528) qualified with catalog (P972). Maybe pick one item to fully model? Multichill (talk) 16:26, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
yeah, circumstances etc. … all good here, privileged situation, I suppose. Thanks for coming back to the catalog idea, the catalog code (P528)/catalog (P972) approach was in the discussion, seems I neglected it a bit to early, thinking of a catalog (P972) too narrow as a GLAM and exhibition thing. I modelled Domforum (Q1237366), which shows a constraint with the starting date. We could put it as qualifier to heritage designation (P1435), not sure how I like it. Another thing: Denkmalliste der Stadt Köln (Q15710850) needs to be a subclass of catalogue (Q2352616) to be used like this, which collides with is a list of (P360). Anything to be said against making an item a subclass of list (Q12139612) AND catalogue (Q2352616)? --Elya (talk) 17:25, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
@Elya: We usually put the start date (and end date) as qualifier to heritage designation (P1435), see for example Grote Kerk (Q1545193). I moved it.
I made Denkmalliste der Stadt Köln (Q15710850) an instance of catalogue (Q2352616) and than realized heritage register (Q15097084) is even better. The constraint violation is gone. What do you think? Multichill (talk) 21:25, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
Perfect, looks beautiful! --Elya (talk) 16:26, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
@Elya: I'm happy you like it! Have you thought about how to import it? Getting an csv export and using OpenRefine to prepare the data is probably a good approach.
Adding a backlink to Wikidata like in this example might be a thing to consider. I had a robot do that on the Dutch Wikipedia.
Please let me know how it goes. I still want to import list like nl:Lijst van gemeentelijke monumenten in Haarlem-Noord some day and it's nice to learn from other regions. Multichill (talk) 19:28, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
well, my next steps would be: 1) talk with Bonn and Wuppertal ;-) to agree on this model, these are the three largest lists in NRW. 2) try to identify existing monuments in Cologne without heritage designation (P1435) (I suppose some manual work, around 1500 items are subclass of (P279) of building (Q41176) ). 3) outreach our municipal Cologne Open Data and heritage departments to a) publish an update the 2015 list *sigh* and b) change the license to CC0 *sigh* 4) Happily use OpenRefine to do the tiny rest … I'll keep you updated! Thanks again for your help, it's always great to work with you. --Elya (talk) 19:46, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

Yale Center for British Art, upload to Wikidata and Commons

Hi Multichill, I've been asked by the Yale Center for British Art to upload all their public domain content to Wikidata and Commons. Some stuff has been added by Google, mainly paintings, so the stuff I will be uploading is mainly watercolours and drawings, about 40,000 items. I thought the best approach would be to create Wikidata items and have a bot populate Commons - I believe there is one that runs twice a day. But I noticed on the Commons compatible image available at URL (P4765) talk page that there was a bit of a backlog - 40,000 items, so maybe adding another 40,000 isn't a great idea. Is there still a big backlog? A test item, Diana and her Nymphs at a Fountain (Q106291109), I uploaded yesterday still hasn't appeared in Commons - but perhaps I'm doing something wrong. If there is a backlog what is the best approach? By the way, after starting to write my own bot I came across your artdatabot code, which made thing considerably easier - thanks for that work.

On another matter can I ask about copyright. Yale specifically asked me to tag the works with CC0, but it's been suggested that that is not appropriate, as they aren't the actual author of the works. So what is best/easiest - PD-Art? This is for works like this which are all marked as Public Domain on their website. Thanks for any help or advice you can give.
