Welcome to Wikidata, Spatms!

Wikidata is a free knowledge base that you can edit! It can be read and edited by humans and machines alike and you can go to any item page now and add to this ever-growing database!

Need some help getting started? Here are some pages you can familiarize yourself with:

  • Introduction – An introduction to the project.
  • Wikidata tours – Interactive tutorials to show you how Wikidata works.
  • Community portal – The portal for community members.
  • User options – including the 'Babel' extension, to set your language preferences.
  • Contents – The main help page for editing and using the site.
  • Project chat – Discussions about the project.
  • Tools – A collection of user-developed tools to allow for easier completion of some tasks.

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask on Project chat. If you want to try out editing, you can use the sandbox to try. Once again, welcome, and I hope you quickly feel comfortable here, and become an active editor for Wikidata.

Best regards!

Commons categories

edit

Hi. I am just been working through some duplicate categories at User:Pasleim/projectmerge/enwiki-commonswiki and I see that numbers came from some of your work. I am not certain where you identified those categories however did want to indicate that there is value in checking for the existence of an item from the other wikis. You can use a tool like https://wikidata-todo.toolforge.org/duplicity.php to do that work for you, and you can even use https://petscan.wmflabs.org/ to build lists.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:41, 31 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Please do not create new categories when those categories exist. You are making work for others. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:16, 20 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
I would like to draw your attantion to messages above from a couple of years ago. I have merged Q123488437 into the already exisiting Q30626220 as an example. Also, I think that Q123684905 is not an item that should have been created, a category at Commons IMHO is not enough to carry specific "lists" like this onee. I will file a request at WD:RFD. --Lymantria (talk) 08:45, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Please, be more careful!

This morning I have merged quite a few items you created to already existing items. It seems like you do not check possible existance at all. As an example, you created Q123925646 on an American football player, with only a link to a commons category and a Commons category (P373). The image in that category was heavily used, because of course Tyson Jackson (Q1632456) and a couple of wikipedia articles already existed. I merged the two items, but you could by a simple check have avoided the extra work this costs. The same for Q123925972 on St. James High School (Q85802882), with already an article at enwiki. Please, check first. You have been pointed to cases like this one before, but apparently nothing has changed. That is annoying. --Lymantria (talk) 08:14, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Please explain in greater detail what the issue is. When I create a new WikiCommons category, I always add this... {Wikidata Infobox}. Is this wrong? I'm not trying to annoy anyone, but I want to connect categories with Wikidata, just like mostly every category I see. Spatms (talk) 08:20, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Let me try to explain:
  • Not each category at Commons deserves an item at Wikidata. You can read that at Wikidata:Notability that a site link to a Commons category is not in itself sufficient: Category items with a sitelink only to Wikimedia Commons are not permitted, unless either a) there is a corresponding main item which has a sitelink to a Commons gallery or b) the item is used in a Commons-related statement, such as Commons-categorie voor foto's gemaakt door type camera (P2033). You may however connect a Commons category to its subject item, like the example I gave for Tyson Jackson (Q1632456). In such cases the links should be gathered together, and here is the annoying part: you do not seem to check if an item on the subject already exists, so you can add the Commons category to that item in stead of creating a new one. Other people have to do the searching and merging work then. That is very annoying and can easily be omitted.
  • Sometimes a subject can have an item meeting Wikidata:Notability without having a site link. In such cases they can be created with a Commons category link as well. This may be the case for a lot of the schools you created items on. Notability criteria #2 or #3 must be met in such cases. Just a link to commons and a Commons category (P373) is not sufficient. An example is Sterlington High School (Q28230408), where the identifiers give the item notability. I merged the item of that school into that item. Without such identifiers the item is in fact not meeting the notability standards. It would be nice if you did look for identifiers to be added. That would also make the {{Wikidata Infobox}} of some interest. If the item is in fact empty, the infobox is not very interesting either.
  • There are also cases in which one of the wikipedias, for your creations mostly enwiki, already has a category, for instance Category:Schools in Webster Parish, Louisiana (Q8715685). In such case the Commons category should be added to that item, and not a seperate item should be created. List like items, for instance Lutcher High School alumni (Q123925984), normally only have notability if a wikipedia category is also present. In such cases you should not create the item and you should not add {{Wikidata Infobox}} at Commons.
I hope you understand. Kind regards, Lymantria (talk) 11:43, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Now this minute you created East Ascension High School (Q123966387). Why didn't you check?? Search for "East Ascension High School" and you find East Ascension High School (Q5327725). Add the commons link there and do not create a new item! --Lymantria (talk) 12:14, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ok, sorry to annoy you. I didn't have time to read. I have two more categories, but will avoid any data. Spatms (talk) 12:16, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for this detailed explanation that including specific examples. I did find this helpful and it gave me a better understanding of what should be connected to wikidata. Since I'm not an admin, I didn't have an idea of the effort it takes to merge topics on the backend. Honestly, I felt it was better to connect more categories to wikidata because many categories have them. I thought adding a {Wikidata Infobox} was required for each topic similar to the infobox on wikipedia. My intent was not to annoy and I apologize for causing any annoyance. I enjoy being able to add content to both Wikipedia and WikiCommons and always want to be a good citizen in the Wiki community. Thank you again for the effort you put forth explaining wikidata. Take care. Spatms (talk) 07:05, 23 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Let's proceed improving Commons, Wikidata and Wikipedia! Happy Holidays. --Lymantria (talk) 07:31, 23 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
