@Jarekt: I'm not sure about this batch; shouldn't document file on Wikimedia Commons (P996) be used only on instances of version, edition or translation (Q3331189)? --Jahl de Vautban (talk) 15:31, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

+1 - I just changed data on File:Archimède - De la méthode, trad. Reinach, 1907.djvu, that was linked to "work" by Archimedes... with publication date=1907 (!!) Hsarrazin (talk) 15:54, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jahl de Vautban: document file on Wikimedia Commons (P996) I thought is for any written work (Q47461344) where we have multi-page PDF or DjVU on Commons, especially if the text of the scanned document is on Wikisource as is the case with Q104942525. Maybe the issue is that Q104942525 needs have additional instance of (P31) that mentions that it is a item for a written document. --Jarekt (talk) 16:22, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
for "work" items, the use is generally to use a front-cover image to present the work, not the complete scan of an edition ;) Hsarrazin (talk) 19:03, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hsarrazin: Yes File:Archimède - De la méthode, trad. Reinach, 1907.djvu was connected to a wrong item. I could undo this batch and put a constraint to add document file on Wikimedia Commons (P996) only when it does not violate Property:P996#P2302 constraint. However even this might not prevent files on Commons being connected to wrong items. By the way I am doing my occasional cleanup of c:Category:Books with Wikidata item: quick statements category, where the code automatically detects data avaiable on Commons but missing in Wikidata. I am always trying to improve the rules of what is added and what is not. --Jarekt (talk) 16:37, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
the book scans (djvu/pdf files) are to be added to version, edition or translation (Q3331189) (or, in some cases on article (Q191067)), because they always are by definition, reproductions of a specific edition of a written work (Q47461344) (specific language, date of publication, publisher, etc.) -> NEVER on a work itself...
however, when the wrong Qid has been linked to the file, it's difficult to identify there has been an error...
some of us wikisourcerers are presently trying to update wikidata description of ou books, and add the right QID to both wikisource page and Commons item, but errors continue to occur, especially among people who do not really understand the work/edition separation on wikidata, and want to link all editions of a specific work through direct QID... -> maybe there should be a discussion concerning the right property to use in SDC for "edition" and for "work"...   --Hsarrazin (talk) 19:02, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hsarrazin: I fill add a constraint to add document file on Wikimedia Commons (P996) only to items where P31=version, edition or translation (Q3331189). Also If it helps, c:Module:Artwork (backend of Book template) can add many more book related maintenance categories, for example to detect many undesirable combinations of SDC, Wikidata and Wikitext fields. We have dozens of them for the Artworks but not much for books. That can speed us some maintenance, If anybody has ideas what to flag. --Jarekt (talk) 23:36, 3 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
