- Motivation
I think it would be beneficial to look into this and strive to make a connection, through this property, between WikiData and Google Places ---Omert33 (talk) 12:05, 22 February 2017 (UTC)
- Discussion
- Hmm, as far as I can tell one cannot make use of that identifier or even verify it without a Google API key. Is there a formatter URL that would work for this? I'm reluctant to add something that is so closed off, even if it seems useful. ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:03, 22 February 2017 (UTC)
- https://www.destsetters.com/place/ChIJtcaxrqlZwokRfwmmibzPsTU seems to work for accessing this particular example. Can we have a few more examples to see whether the website would generally work as a formatter url? ChristianKl (talk) 17:45, 22 February 2017 (UTC)
- It's not closed off. It's a working feature. All that's needed is an API key which can be obtained at the Google API Developers Console and can be restirected for use with Wikipedia. Example: https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/place/details/json?key=YOURKEY&placeid=ChIJtcaxrqlZwokRfwmmibzPsTU --Omert33 (talk) 13:18, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Seems to be a test feature > Oppose
--- Jura 06:57, 2 March 2017 (UTC)- What makes you think that it's a test feature?
- @Denny: As being both at Google and heavily involved in Wikidata, can you tell us more about whether we could publically expose the API key in a formatter url and that's in line with Google ideas of how the Place ID is supposed to work? ChristianKl (talk) 19:10, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- How 'bout we change this to something which does not require an API Key like the Google Maps CID of a certain place like this: https://maps.google.com/?cid=15074921902713971043 . The CID of a certain place on Google Maps can be acquired by using this type of online tool. --Omert33 (talk) 19:50, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- The URL? As it was changed to something else, striking-out my comment above.

- Support - The current CID structure makes better sense. --Omert33 (talk) 19:57, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- Support ok this seems reasonable. Can you clarify the domain? Various online references seem to think it's an identifier for "businesses", or is it really for places or buildings? ArthurPSmith (talk) 16:52, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
- ArthurPSmith, thanks for your support. In regards to your question, the answer is no. It's not just business headquarters. From my own personal experience, I see that the Google CID pretty much covers every place which exists on Google Maps. Just look at this one for Grand Canyon National Park: https://maps.google.com/?cid=2249734650762174505 . I think this is a much required property here on WikiData. Seems odd that it's not up here yet. --Omert33 (talk) 18:35, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

- What happens with organizations that have multiple places? Can we restrict the domain to places and call the property "Google Maps place CID"?ChristianKl (talk) 08:52, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
- ChristianKl - I was wondering about that also - but I couldn't find an example where it resolved to multiple locations, it always seems to be just one. Do you have a counterexample? ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:00, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
- ArthurPSmith ChristianKl Basically, each "Google Place" has its own unique CID. So, for example Hilton Mid-town in New York (https://maps.google.com/?cid=3041116244787805312) is not the same as the Hilton in Times Square (https://maps.google.com/?cid=7728579699389063324). Understand? But of course, this is not the case with most Wikipedia articles. There's only one Empire State Building just as there is only one Niagra Falls or Grand Canyon National Park. So I don't think this poses a problem. --Omert33 (talk) 04:44, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
- Okay, I have changed the name to Google Maps Place CID and left the domain as it is. ChristianKl (talk) 07:29, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

- There was adequate support for creation under the original name and description. A constraint can trap erroneous cases of multiple values. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:59, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
- ChristianKl Thank you. I think this was a much required property here. Question: Yesterday, while linking some landmarks with this property, it created the link with the ID and everything worked fine but today, upon linking new landmarks with this property, the link isn't created. Is there a problem? --Omert33 (talk) 08:23, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
- The link is created client-side via Javascript. If the page takes a while to load it sometimes doesn't get created. Don't worry about it. ChristianKl (talk) 08:26, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
