Motivation edit

While we have serial number (P2598) which is usually good enough to uniquely identify most locomotives, it does not help when a manufacturer does not use serial numbers – these are usually the railway companies' own workshops. It also does not help to identify carriages and wagons, as these were rarely issued serial numbers.

In these cases, works' order numbers can be used as the next-best identifier. Also, many locomotive and rolling stock manufacturers included the order number on their official photographs. — Iain Bell (talk) 11:58, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion edit

@Iain Bell, Jura1: should we use "monolingual text" instead of "string" for the property type? Pamputt (talk) 09:34, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the time, I think the language code would be zxx. So, I'd probably stray with string-datatype. --- Jura 09:44, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
