Motivation

edit

In June 2023 the Oxford English Dictionary discontinued exposing URLs of the form "https://www.oed.com/view/Entry/n" for integer n (as expected by Oxford English Dictionary entry ID (pre-July 2023) (P5275)) in favor of URLs of the form "https://www.oed.com/dictionary/url-slug-with-hyphens_and-underscore" using a URL slug with hyphens and an underscore. While it is still possible to add values for P5275 from this index of values, and while existing links using the old URL scheme currently still resolve, there will nevertheless be entries added since that index was made that would not have appropriate P5275 values, and since the values used with P5275 are not exposed in the current OED entry pages, there would be no way to add P5275 values for those newer entries.

To get the object identifier for a particular (sub-)entry, it is enough to click "Cite" on that entry and note the integer at the end of the DOI in the citation.

I believe this identifier will be more valuable than simply using the URL slugs because sub-entries of OED entries (including phrasal verbs and individual entry meanings and sub-meanings) can be identified this way as well: the examples given for "set up" and the senses of "lose" (to the extent that I could map each of them to a distinct (sub-)sense in the OED entry for that verb) do not have a portable and succinct URL slug that would work with the /dictionary/ URL scheme.   Support I can’t view these entries from my phone without a subscription but I should be able to from my work ip address. AdamSeattle (talk) 11:29, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment looking at the example DOI links, it seems to points to https://www.oed.com/dictionary/mourners-bench_n?tab=meaning_and_use#11355608 which basically just points to a paywall 99% of the time as opposed to https://www.oed.com/dictionary/mourners-bench_n or https://www.oed.com/dictionary/mourners-bench_n?tab=factsheet#11355608 which points to some actually useful info for any user. Another thing to notice is that the DOI links seem to be actually inconsistent, again in the examples:

- https://doi.org/10.1093/OED/1273677318 links to the factsheet

- https://doi.org/10.1093/OED/5024595845 links to a paywalled tab
