Motivation

The 'frame elaboration' property is different from the 'subframe' property. In frame semantics, elaboration is the process of adding detail to a scene overall, making a more abstract scenario more concrete. Examples include BUILDING A HOUSE being a frame elaboration of BUILDING A BUILDING and CLIMBING A MOUNTAIN being a frame elaboration of GOING UP. On the other hand, the 'subframe' property refers to an integral sub-scene that forms part of a larger scene, as in TAKING OFF SHIRT is a subframe of UNDRESSING. Like the subframe relation, in frame elaboration a given frame can be an elaboration of two unrelated frames (see Example 1).
