Rationale, discussion and results

This request was copied from the AN for the sake of keeping the CU requests together

Whenever the item about Thomas Coffman is deleted, he recreates it under a new user account. You are welcome to perform a CheckUser (is this the right term?) if you wish to do so.@Jasper Deng:@Sotiale: --Trade (talk) 00:28, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Rujon are currently nominating all items i have created for deleion. I wonder if he's trying to get back at? --Trade (talk) 00:47, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Trade: it turns out that there's more to this story. The two accounts you mentioned are   Confirmed with, in addition, the following   Likely to be related, based on technical evidence as well as their common behavior of creating items on (often marginally or non-) notable entrepreneurs:
As CheckUser only looks back three months, it's conceivable there've been many more accounts than these.--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:38, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jasper Deng: should this be copied and/or moved to Wikidata:Requests for checkuser so that when archived it is easier to find in the future? --DannyS712 (talk) 02:49, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Same question for the other cases above where you responded as a checkuser (either doing the check or declining) - should they be moved? --DannyS712 (talk) 02:50, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For historical reasons, we shouldn't move old requests, but maybe we need to make clearer that most cases of socking should go to requests for CheckUser. In fact, I don't see why that needs to be limited to only ambiguous cases, since even in clear-cut cases, if we have reasonable suspicion of sleepers (as what led me to dig up this sockfarm), checking is still useful.--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:51, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Can we at least copy them to keep the CU records together? --DannyS712 (talk) 03:12, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

So, any idea how we can prevent this from happening again? I doubt he's going to stop creating sockfarms to create entrepreneur items. @Jasper Deng:--Trade (talk) 23:03, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It would be nice if there were an easy way to tell that a new item might be a recreation of a deleted item. I wonder if we could provide a way to search labels of deleted items. Bovlb (talk) 23:19, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Or we could just make it so deleted items still displays their original label when linking to them? --Trade (talk) 23:37, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
According to Wikipedia:CheckUser it is not fishing to check an account where the alleged sockmaster is unknown, but there is reasonable suspicion of sockpuppetry, and a suspected sock-puppet's operator is sometimes unknown until a CheckUser investigation is concluded. Might wanna keep that in mind @Bovlb:--Trade (talk) 14:55, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Trade: I'm afraid I have no idea why this remark was directed at me. Was it intended for another thread or a different user? Bovlb (talk) 15:50, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
