Wikidata:WikiProject Anime and Manga/Databases

There are a lot of databases that hold information on anime and manga. This page contains information with working with them in general and notes about specific databases.

General - All Databases edit

Genres edit

Genres should not be copied from databases. Instead, they should be copied from the official website if any. If there are no official sources available (very unlikely), then it might be possible to copy from a database. However, if you do this, consult multiple databases, and only copied the genres all of the databases have in common. The more databases consulted, the more accurate the genre list will be.

Demographics (shojo, shounen, etc.) are usually fine to copy from anime/manga databases.

Items with instance of (P31)anime television series season (Q100269041), instance of (P31)manga chapter (Q53460949), and other series parts edit

  • Instead of recording the series ordinal in instance of (P31), they should be recorded with part of the series (P179)<series name>series ordinal (P1545)<num>.
    • Followed by should only be set if there is a sequel to that series/volume, like a season/volume 2 to a season/volume 1.
    • Follows can be set to "no value" for season/volume 1's, otherwise should be set to the prequel season/volume

Anime Databases edit

General edit

  • Older anime may have a start date of month/year or year only.

Anime Movies edit

  • The air date on most databases is for the original (Japanese/Korean/Chinese) version. Each version in other languages (subbed or dubbed) should get it's own item

Manga Databases edit

General edit

  • Older manga may have a start date of month/year or year only.
  • Mangas may have reboots where a new manga is published under the same time as an older manga, meaning that databases could be giving you conflicting information based on which version of the manga they are talking about.

number of parts of this work (P2635) edit

  • It is usually safe to copy number of volumes from manga databases for completed manga.
  • Usually it is safe to copy chapter number as well, but if there are discrepancies between databases it can be hard to determine the true answer without reading the last volume or finding someone who has read the last volume.

inception (P571), start time (P580), and publication date (P577) edit

  • inception (P571) should be used if the manga had a pre-serialization period. Maybe we could make a separate entity for the pre-serialization version, since some manga databases track those separately?
  • start time (P580) should be used for when serialization starts in a magazine.
  • publication date (P577) should be used for the publication date of a volume. Ideally each volume would have their own item but that will be a massive undertaking.

official website (P856) edit

There is only ever one official website, although there may be multiple statements for older URLs that are no longer valid. All other websites should use either full work available at URL (P953) or described at URL (P973) depending on if you can read the entire manga on that site (with or without paying) or if it's just a description and a listing of the volumes.

Titles edit

  • Romanized titles on manga databases are good for aliases but should not be used for Revised Hepburn romanization (P2125) since not all of them are revised hepburn romanizations.
  • The non-japanese label should be the official title in that language if it exists, then an unofficial title in that language, then the official romanization, then an unofficial romanization.
  • All forms of romanization and unofficial titles should be added as aliases for non-Japanese titles.
    • Do not add romanizations as aliases to Japanese.
  • For multiple official titles (such as official Japanese title, official English title), they should be recorded with title (P1476).

MyAnimeList edit

  • Unlike most manga databases, extra chapters in a manga (such as omake chapters at the end of a volume) are counted as their own chapters. Do not use MyAnimeList for determining number of chapters.

API Quirks edit

  • You cannot search with most non-ASCII characters, it will fail with a bad request. The search feature on the
  • There is an undocumented character limit for searches, 64 characters. Anything more will also fail with a bad request.
  • MyAnimeList does not provide accurate information on adult anime/manga. However, manga depicting explicit sex (such as manga published in hentai magazines) will be marked with the "hentai" genre.

AniList edit

  • AniList tags are user-generated and cannot be used reliably.

MangaUpdates edit

  • MangaUpdates categories are user-generated and cannot be used reliably.
