Wikidata:WikiProject PCC Wikidata Pilot/University of Washington
Project Summary Edit
Overall Objectives Edit
- Promote understanding of use of Wikibase and Wikidata in GLAM context
- Develop local expertise in Wikidata editing, and explore issues such as Wikidata governance, data persistence, data modeling, identity management and development
- Discover, create, and test Wikidata workflows for reuse by GLAM institutions
- Coordinate with other institutions to escort library data into the semantic web
- Help develop Wikidata best practices for library data
Phase I (August 2020-December 2020) Edit
Prong 1: Launch Data Creation Projects (August 2020-) Edit
Objectives:
- Enrich and link library data by adding Wikidata statements and identifiers
- Become fluent in workflows for adding basic data
- Become more knowledgeable of the Wikidata user interface
- Explore linking across platforms that would be useful to library users
- Explore ways to improve library data
Tasks:
- Create Wikidata entities for UW faculty, dissertants, schools, departments, programs, buildings, and concepts (especially for SACO proposals) -- Adam Schiff, Crystal Clements, and other volunteer catalogers
- Draft application profiles (human-readable) for each type of entity created -- Adam Schiff, Crystal Clements
- Draft workflows, including selection and use of tools, to correspond to each application profile -- Adam Schiff, Crystal Clements
- Host a training session on Wikidata, invite all catalogers to participate -- Adam Schiff
- Create machine-actionable versions of application profiles -- Theo Gerontakos, Ben Riesenberg, Crystal Clements, Melissa Morgan
- Add Wikidata URIs to name access points in MARC records for UW dissertations (in $1) -- Adam Schiff, Crystal Clements, and other volunteer catalogers
Prong 2: Install Wikibase (August 2020-December 2020) Edit
Objectives:
- Consider how to build Wikibase platform into permanent workflows
- Develop local expertise in the Wikibase platform
Tasks:
- Hire student technician to install and configure software -- Theo Gerontakos, Ben Riesenberg, Crystal Clements
- Explore interfaces, data, and tools -- Theo Gerontakos, [new student technician]
- Bonus task: Explore workflows for batch creation and editing of entities, and reconciliation using local Wikibase instance as a test environment -- Theo Gerontakos, Ben Riesenberg, Melissa Morgan
Phase II (January 2021-August 2021) Edit
Prong I: Continue Data Creation Projects (January-August 2021)-- Adam Schiff, Crystal Clements, others Edit
Objectives:
- Continue objectives in Phase I, Prong 1
- Improve library data workflows in Wikidata environment
- Help create identifier linking and identifier management at web scale through use of Wikidata as an identifier hub
Tasks:
- Continue Phase I, Prong 1 work: Continue creating entities, prepare application profiles for publication, prepare workflows for publication
- Focus on documentation of workflows and publish to Wikidata project page to be shared with the world
- Minimize redundant identifier creation when using Wikidata as an identifier hub
- Auto-generate theses Work items using MARC record and profile (need to figure out how to batch load) -- Theo Gerontakos
Prong 2: Local Wikibase Exploration (January-August 2021) -- Theo Gerontakos, Ben Riesenberg, Melissa Morgan, [new student technician] Edit
Objectives:
- Learn Wikibase somewhat
- Consider using Wikibase in our local workflows
- Consider using Wikibase as a central platform for creating and publishing local semantic web metadata
- Learn how to work with batches of data across both the local Wikibase instance and the Wikidata platform
Tasks may include:
- Load data in the local Wikibase instance; use as appropriate
- Create some entities; ideally: convert a single digital collection
- Explore user-driven ontology design in Wikibase to explore cross data model navigation
- Manage local data using already existing tools that expand Wikibase
- Create local tools to extend Wikibase
- Move batches of data in and out of the local instance
- Move batches of data in and out of Wikidata
- Document new workflows and findings in a report to be posted on the project Wiki page
