Wikidata:WikiProject Railways/Properties for rolling stock
Hi all,
at the moment, the properties for railway rolling stock are pretty inconsistent. Here are those that already exist (aka, I've found). Please feel free to comment! --Jcornelius (talk) 22:51, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

Questions on the above properties edit
Based on the above listed properties, I've the following questions:
- How do you add inception (P571)? I would usually add two qualifiers (start time (P580), end time (P582)) to it, but is that really the best way to show a period of time in which the rolling stock was produced?
- location of creation (P1071) Gives me a constraint that an item with location of creation (P1071) shouldn't have country (P17). Does that really make sense?
- Yes, as that would be country of origin (P495)
- I would differ between total produced (P1092) and quantity (P1114), as the latter shows the current (or at least qualified by a date) amount of vehicles, while the first shows the originally produced amount? Would you agree?
- Sounds sensible. The quantity (P1114) values have (usually) been imported from de.wikipedia's infobox (Anzahl)
- wheelbase (P3039) gives me a constraint saying that the item should be a mode of transport (Q334166) or automobile model (Q3231690). Needs to be adapted, right?
- Regarding length (P2043): It is really common to define a length of the vehicle and a length from buffer to buffer. How could that be (better) qualified?
- add the qualifier criterion used (P1013) with either length over buffers (Q25380013), length over headstocks (Q111900404), or length over coupler pulling faces (Q111900522).
- How do a qualify height (P2048) better? Often, rolling stock has heights above the rail, or above the platform, etc.
- Is type of electrification (P930) really the best one for rolling stock? Seems to be originally used for railway lines.
- Can fleet or registration number (P2802) be used for railway rolling stock? The word "fleet" kind of made me think that it was created only for ships.
- Yes. See the example on the property's talk page.
- Is powered by (P516) really the right one to describe the kind of motor? Further, it gives me a constraint.
- railway signalling system (P3019) is made for railway lines. Could be extended to rolling stock as well?

Suggestions for new properties edit
- I haven't found any good property to define the maximum speed of a rail vehicle. speed limit (P3086) seems to be for roads and railway lines, right?
- Would be good to have something like "Current collector" or "Current pickup" (for the above mentioned example that would be pantograph (Q657874))
- Would be good to have something like "Tractive effort" (for the above mentioned example that would be 300 kN)
- Also something to define the acceleration (like "380 s (0–320 km/h)")
- Would be good to have something like "Brake(s)" to define better what kind of brakes the vehicle has. Also something like "Braking deceleration".
- I didn't find anything to define the railway coupling (Q1501648) and the "Pivot distance".

Other stuff edit
- I find it really hard to think about all the properties that are needed for a "complete" (whatever that means) rolling stock item. Does it make sense to have a least a minimum of ~10 properties that every rolling stock item should have? Something like a template? --Jcornelius (talk) 22:51, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
- I think that this is helpful. There is a possibilty to create such an item with a form using Cradle. I can help you to create the Form. This is a example for such a form to create a item about railway stations. [1]--Hogü-456 (talk) 20:41, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
