Dragonflies

Apparently, the spectacular sixty new species of dragonflies have been included in Plazi and ZooBank, and have been pronounced ready for Wikidata. Anybody so inclined? - Brya (talk) 18:05, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

See: Klaas-Douwe B. Dijkstra, Jens Kipping, Nicolas Mézière: Sixty New Dragonfly and Damselfly Species from Africa (Odonata). Odonatologica. 44(4) 2015; 447-678 (PDF, urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:A0592344-0F17-4463-8CE2-02900DBB8F20). --Succu (talk) 18:27, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
It's Sixty new dragonfly and damselfly species from Africa (Odonata) (Q21714913) created yesterday by Daniel Mietchen. ;) --Succu (talk) 21:53, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
Plazi provides a DwCA. So there are two options to create them. BTW: ruwiki has allready six articles. --Succu (talk) 22:08, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
[EC]Next step is to set up the items for the individual species - I started one of them (Umma gumma (Q21714929)). --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 22:11, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
I we use the item for the paper as a reference in items about the species, we can track progress, e.g. via WhatLinksHere. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 22:34, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
Info The Plazi-DwCA contains an error. Africocypha varicolor is included twice, Umma gumma is missing. My bot will create the missing 59 items within the next hours. --Succu (talk) 14:29, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
Done. --Succu (talk) 16:41, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
Great! In this respect we are keeping up with the times, and within forty-eight hours after the appeal. I see we do have a Plazi link for Umma gumma, do we need a DwCA-page? I also see Daniel Mietchen made both the Plazi link and the ZooBank-link (same identifier), but the bot didn't: what are the ins and outs of that? - Brya (talk) 17:37, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
The bot added both: Plazi ID (P1992) and ZooBank ID for name or act (P1746). What do you mean with DwCA-page? --Succu (talk) 17:54, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
Great, thanks! Now how can we streamline this workflow for future such cases, or to keep up with similar ones from the past that have not been indexed here, or not fully? For instance, I am keeping an eye on Species of Trigonopterus, so far manually. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 00:20, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
Yes, I see the bot added both; don't know how I percieved this as missing. Sorry about that. As to DwCA, you said that in the Plazi-DwCA "Umma gumma is missing", and since we have a PLAZI-page for Umma gumma, I assumed that there is/should be a separate DwCA-page? - Brya (talk) 04:26, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
As I stated above, it's an error in the archive. In the column scientificName you will find the name Africocypha varicolor Dijkstra, Meziere & Gunther twice but with different UUIDs: 03A25264CA08FFFCEEC8FEA94509FE3A (Africocypha varicolor) and 03A25264CA15FFFAEF37FB524211FE1F (Umma gumma). --Succu (talk) 16:20, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
I don't get it, I can click on "additional versions" "DarwinCore Archive" and I get a zip file, which in turn yields seven files. I suppose the file "taxa" should contain the error, but I don't see it. However, most files have a date of today, so maybe it was corrected? - Brya (talk) 18:00, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
Yep, the error in taxa.txt was corrected. I assume someone with a Plazi connection read this page. ;) --Succu (talk) 18:30, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
Yes, thanks. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 01:05, 18 December 2015 (UTC)
As an interim solution we could create a subpage of this project, where everybody could propose newly described taxa for the inclusion in WD. One has only to give an item with the publication, a DOI (P356) and/or a ZooBank publication ID (P2007)/ZooBank ID for name or act (P1746)... --Succu (talk) 16:52, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
I just started Wikidata:WikiProject Taxonomy/Publication queue to test things out. To scale up, we might have to consider subsubpages like Wikidata:WikiProject Taxonomy/Publication queue/Q21764115 (or using a DOI), linked from Wikidata:WikiProject Taxonomy/Publication queue and embedded there as long as request is open. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 01:05, 18 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I tested the creation/addition of items/properties via Zoobank today. It works fine. As expected the hardest part is to identify the author(s) of the publication. One thing I observed: The Zoobank-Acts are missing a exact page reference. --Succu (talk) 21:39, 18 December 2015 (UTC)
That's a great start - thanks! I put in a few more, including some for which I suspect the workflow not to work. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 02:59, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
Should we move to Wikidata talk:WikiProject Taxonomy/Publication queue? I think it's a better place to record and discuss all the specific cases and possible workflows. --Succu (talk) 21:41, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
That might be a good idea. It just seems a daunting prospect, as there are a lot of magazines that have such papers. It could be a very long list. And what about papers that do not have new names, but rather hold revisions? - Brya (talk) 06:44, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Taxon source of/natural product of covered in same Wikipedia article

There's some discussion on en.Wikipedia about interwiki links for the apple article (which covers the fruit and the species) see here. es.Wikipedia has separate articles for the fruit and the species. Is it possible to link a Wikipedia redirect on Wikidata? I tried changing the link in Q158657 to Malus domestica (a redirect on en.Wikipedia) in order to free up the apple link for Q89. I'm not sure if I was doing something wrong, or whether Wikidata disallows linking to redirects (which appears to be the case, as the link went right back to apple after saving). Plantdrew (talk) 17:12, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

There is no real reason why the enwiki page shouldn't be at Q89. It was, but somebody removed it. I disagreed with that, but due to the mixed-up nature of the enwiki page it can be argued any number of ways (Talk:Q20638126,Talk:Q3355098). As it is only one of several such problem cases, I left it that way, waiting for a user who feels differently. - Brya (talk) 17:55, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
