Language edit

Is it possible to use "language templates" for this baner? Przykuta (talk) 22:33, 30 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

What "language templates" do you mean? What would they do? --Yair rand (talk) 23:15, 30 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
switch to user language, like on the Wikimedia Commons/central notice. Przykuta (talk) 23:43, 30 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
You mean so that it shows a different notice of one's user language is set to a different language? I think setting up Mediawiki:Sitenotice/langcode would work. For example, if one created a German-translated version of the sitenotice at Mediawiki:Sitenotice/de, users with language settings set to German would see it. --Yair rand (talk) 23:47, 30 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
I assume this will go away very quickly anyway. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 06:48, 31 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
I hope ;) But sitenotice will be used many times in the future. Przykuta (talk) 08:09, 31 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
I think that it's essential that either subpages (Mediawiki:Sitenotice/langcode) or the use of Template:LangSwitch would work. I guess that we do not want to require users to have good English language skills. --Leyo 09:11, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Danke, --Michawiki (talk) 23:11, 7 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I'v just seen that I wrote in German on an English page. Here once more my wish: Please give me the translation rights fpr the Sitenotice for Upper Sorbian (hsb) and Lower Sorbian (dsb). Thanks. --Michawiki (talk) 21:24, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Is Transwiki-Importeur the only way for this? Greetings, Conny (talk) 16:37, 10 November 2013 (UTC).Reply

Could someone please add a notice about this RfC? --LlamaAl (talk) 00:33, 16 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

dismiss edit

Hello, good news! Thanks to FreedomFighterSparrow and Brion, unregistered users can now hide the sitenotice again. Previously, they were forced to see it continuously.

In all cases, please use the sitenotice with care, and keep in mind that occasional visitors see sitenotices on all their visits, if they visit less than once a month or they don't click "dismiss" and save a cookie. Nemo 15:43, 24 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Why sitenotice and why direct link to Google website edit

I have two questions:

  • Why is Sitenotice being used as opposed to m:CentralNotice? Please note that if someone targets a CN banner on WD some users will see two banners on top of each other. Among some other shortcomings of the current approach.
  • Why is there a direct link to a non-Wikimedia website (which is also not an affiliate website which is what usually is tolerated) which is governed by a different privacy policy etc. without a clear indication of that? A good practice would be to link to the form from the landing page while providing all the supplementary information / warning.

@Gnoeee: as the one who installed it. --Base (talk) 10:49, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Base: Thanks for notifying. I think Sitenotice and the CentralNotice will not overlap each other. Sorry if I am wrong. And about the third party survey link on the banner, I agree with you. We can include the Privacy Policy and Terms of Use. Pinging the requestor @Sannita_(WMF): for a update on this.-❙❚❚❙❙ GnOeee ❚❙❚❙❙ 12:22, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
They will. See for example mkwiki, it has quite a hefty Sitenotice and then you might stumble upon e.g. Stewards elections banner on top of it. --Base (talk) 12:44, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Base: Hi, thanks for your questions. Sitenotice has been preferred to Centralnotice, because the message was supposed to reach only the Wikidata community, and not the global community - at least for the time being, which is until the end of February.
As per the non-Wikimedia website, we already know the problems that go with it, but we can edit the sitenotice to indicate that it is a non-Wikimedia-based survey.
Anyway, in the survey landing page there is already a message that reads:
«This survey is conducted via a platform provided by a third party, which may be subject to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data processing, please see the survey's privacy policy: https://w.wiki/yKU (in English)»
with the final link that links to the wmf:Universal Code of Conduct Feedback Survey Privacy Statement, set up by WMF. I hope this is sufficient as an answer, but if it isn't please let me know. :) --Sannita (WMF) (talk) 17:54, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sannita, CentralNotice campaigns are targeted at specific project, interface language or country (all of those are optional). It is absolutely possible to target a campaign at just Wikidata community. I hope you do update the banner — it is good that the landing page already indicates privacy information, the problem is that someone can click directly on the survey link from the banner and never see the landing page where that information is written. And thank you for the answer! :) --Base (talk) 18:27, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Base: thanks! I didn't know that, next time I'll take that into consideration! Anyway, sorry for being a little late in answering you, but I was considering the last steps to take for the last days of consultation.
@Gnoeee: if you would be so kind to help me in putting up the new text, that you find here:
(Full disclosure: I could do it on my own with my volunteer account, but I really don't want to mix up the two levels, and actually I'll be happy to receive feedback on it)
Cheers! Sannita (WMF) (talk) 21:42, 20 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Sannita (WMF): Yes will update the banner for now..-❙❚❚❙❙ GnOeee ❚❙❚❙❙ 17:31, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

clear:right edit

@Lea Lacroix (WMDE): This looks slightly bad on Vector and pretty bad on Timeless (Timeless has a quite large margin for <p>). Couldn’t it be reverted? —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:25, 6 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry, I only saw your message now. I just removed the banner as the event is over. Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 16:56, 14 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
