Having trouble with scope on when to use this property
editWith FaroeSoccer player ID (P6627) as a test case, I wanted to question what @Rdrg109 and @ArthurPSmith had brought up in the property proposal originally. I now see that there are constraint issues when trying to apply a "main subject" context but using Wikidata item of this property (P1629). An example: On this FaroeSoccer player ID (P6627) I want to make a statement that "the object/subject of this external identifier is a association football player (Q937857)". Which is exactly the class that FaroeSoccer player ID (P6627) "identifies" externally. Additionally it would be useful to make a statement to also say that "the main subject is association football (Q2736)". This allows for instance for someone to query using SPARQL and retrieve all properties that have statements where the object has a label of "association football" or "soccer". Currently, those kinds of queries are hard to do in SPARQL from what I see without some adequate statements already on properties. Right now it is easier for me to use Wikidata Property Explorer https://prop-explorer.toolforge.org/ and type in a text filter of "association football" or "soccer" in the Label or Description boxes. But I still would like there to be a way to use SPARQL itself for reproduction and tooling purposes. And the only way I can see how to do that is that external identifiers need more subject relationship statements on them. Which brings me to the question, How best to do that with this new property identifies (P10476) or with main subject (P921) or some other combination? As seen in my example use case with FaroeSoccer player ID (P6627) it seems that the constraint might need to be loosened up to also allow being applied to properties and not only items as suggested by @Jura1 during the proposal?
Here's another example where it would be useful to apply a statement of identifies (P10476) onto GeneReviews ID (P668) to say each GeneReviews ID actually identifies a scholarly article (Q13442814) -- Thadguidry (talk) 16:05, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
- Make an item representing an individual FaroeSoccer player ID (P6627) and make that the Wikidata item of this property (P1629) of FaroeSoccer player ID (P6627). Then use identifies (P10476)association football (Q2736) on that identifier item. Yeah, it's going to be a two-step querying process to get all the properties that relate to association football (Q2736), but it's the best we got right now and because Wikidata item of this property (P1629) is still conflated and there's not much we can do unless someone decides to help clean up its intended usage.
