WikiProject Informatics has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead. Currently, Microsoft Excel (Q11272) uses file extension (P1195) while the constraints say that it only should be used for file formats. Do we want to delete the claim or alternatively change the constraints? ChristianKl12:55, 2 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Intuitively I would say that the constraints are correct - these statements should go on items about the formats. − Pintoch (talk) 13:13, 2 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
The correct way would be to use file extension (P1195) only for formats. That would mean that we will have to create new items for the formats of every software which has his own fileformat. No issue for Microsoft Excel (Q11272) – we should have those anyway but for small programs which have there own fileformat that no other program ever uses, it means a lot of additional items. But I would still use this – correct – ontology. -- MichaelSchoenitzer (talk) 13:18, 2 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
The correct way would be to link the software with the format it manages, with « reads / writes » properties (to create if we don’t have them yet), and to link the format item with the extension with this property. The constraint make sense. author  TomT0m / talk page 17:59, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
@ChristianKl: We have a property writable file format (P1073) to specify the file format a program can create and/or write to, but it requires items. John Samuel 19:12, 2 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Microsoft Excel (Q11272) can not use something, is not a program. Microsoft Excel (Q11272) is a group (of programs): Microsoft Excel 4.0 for Mac (Q28861741), Microsoft Excel 2003 (Q46391063), Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (Q10329635), etc. Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (Q10329635), for example, is a program, can create and/or write to. A group can not create and/or write to. --Fractaler (talk) 08:02, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Maybe a way to put it is that it is a project - like « the gnome project », or an organization. A project that releases and updates a software from time to time. See Wikidata:Property proposal/project of for related properties.
Another way to put it would be that it’s a class of progams, whose instances all read and write the format (class as there is a lot of versions of this format) author  TomT0m / talk page 17:59, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Also for other components of the Microsoft Office package (Microsoft Office (Q11255)'s component): Microsoft Word (Q11261), Microsoft PowerPoint (Q11266), Microsoft Access (Q80689) (later +Microsoft Outlook (Q80911) and other). Has "file format of Microsoft Office components"? Fractaler (talk) 11:35, 4 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
