- My version: curator of a library
- Gamaliel's version: person who works professionally in a library, and is usually trained in librarianship
This isn't a simple matter. What do we want to include and exclude in this item? Consider the following:
- A janitor in a library
- The sole manager, curator, and maintainer of a public library
- The sole manager, curator, maintainer, and owner of a private collection of books primarily used by the owner, which no one else knows or cares about.
- The sole manager, curator, maintainer, and owner of a notable private collection of books, The Library of the History of Human Imagination
- A person with a degree in library science who is employed by a university as a liaison librarian and whose primary work involves assisting students in finding sources for their studies, with no connection to any library.
- A person who re-shelves books in a library every day as their job.
- A person who delivers books from one library to another every day as their job.
- An accountant for the library whose office is in the library.
- A person who tutors students in a library every day as their job.
I'm reluctant to extend property to number 3, just because a magazine mentions that a celebrity has an unusual set of books for their bookshelf that they have collected. I'm doubtful about the claim that even #2 alone is "usually trained in librarianship". What do others think about the scope of this item? - The work curatorial does not sufficiently encompass the work of many professional librarians, and some of their jobs have no curatorial component at all. Gamaliel (talk) 13:24, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Gameliel: I hear that you have a working definition of "professional librarian". I'm trying to figure out what that definition is and where it comes from. Perhaps we need two items "professional librarian" and "library curator" that are partially coincident. In any case, please reply to whether my examples should be included in this item or not.
