Taxon -> vernacular name edit

Honestly, very unwaited and strange change. Many articles, I am sure, are about strict taxon. --Infovarius (talk) 19:17, 22 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Yes, and this edit broke the infobox at nn:Ormar, which relied on taxonomic data from this item. What was the point of this? --Njardarlogar (talk) 16:50, 3 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Well, we can change it around, making this about Serpentes and the other about snake (or move all the sitelinks). - Brya (talk) 10:42, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Should this be a "common name of" Anniella edit

It seems unlikely to me that anyone who knows anything about _Anniella_ would call it a snake. HYanWong (talk) 16:40, 18 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@UWashPrincipalCataloger, HYanWong: What about those who doesn't know this taxon? "Common name" is for non-biologists, you know. --Infovarius (talk) 19:47, 19 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that you have linked to an item that is not a type of snake. The "legless lizards" item is for a genus of lizards that happen to lack legs, but they are not snakes. It would be OK to use "legless lizards" as an alias for snakes if they are called that by some source, but the "legless lizards" link is not correct because it is an unrelated taxon. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 20:00, 19 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
There are lots of species lizards without legs, not just Anniella. I don't think that people really do refer to them all as "snakes", do they? It's just a mistake, like it would be to link this item to https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q467382 HYanWong (talk) 14:30, 23 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Addendum - there is this family, for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pygopodidae - should that be added too, if Anniella is? Perhaps a better option would be to list "snake" as an alternative (maybe unpreferred) "also known as" name within the Anniella Wikidata entry? HYanWong (talk) 14:37, 23 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
I would add all mentioned taxons as "snakes" here. And I wouldn't list "snake" as an alias to any of them. (There can be "unpreferred" aliases, by the way) Ask any child to name these kinds of animals, what do you hear? --Infovarius (talk) 01:44, 25 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes, a child might say that. But then I would hope that a knowledgeable adult would say they were wrong. I really don't think they would say "yes, some people call them snakes, and that's acceptable". I assume we don't really want to propagate information which is wrong in this sense?
