start time (P580) of Universe (Q1) edit

Heya, just wanted to let you know I removed the start time (P580) claim on Universe (Q1), seeing as how it's basically redundant with the inception (P571) claim. Cheers! :) -- Schneelocke (talk) 15:42, 12 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

has it been created or did it just start? thats a big question ^^ --Shisma (talk) 15:52, 12 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Something doesn't have to be created to be incepted (inceived?). Arlo Barnes (talk) 20:40, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Has part edit

You should avoid using "has part". Instead, favor the inverse relation part of (P361). Thanks. --Izno (talk) 21:39, 23 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

in what case should I use has part(s) (P527) then? --Shisma (talk) 22:25, 23 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well, in my opinion, never :). You should always be able to make the inverse relation, and that minimizes the number of properties on "higher level" pages. But if you were to use it, it would be because it was literally impossible to use "part of", something I'm not sure is ever the case. --Izno (talk) 22:44, 23 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ah, here's a good use: brushed DC electric motor (Q588523). --Izno (talk) 01:08, 24 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

== character role (P453) ==

Your uses of character role (P453) have been incorrect. The property is only supposed to be used as a qualifier of cast member (P161). --Yair rand (talk) 10:50, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

oh, why not also for characters (P674) --Shisma (talk) 12:26, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Characters don't actually have "roles", in the sense being used here, exactly. They might fit some kind of standard function, but they aren't playing a role of a particular character. Note that overlap between multiple meanings of the word "role" that exist in English will not likely exist in all other languages. --Yair rand (talk) 13:17, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

ah, ic. good point! thank you --Shisma (talk) 17:28, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello! This property you proposed has now been created. I used the word inspired, instead of influence, in the description because influence can be something else, and might cause confusion. --Danrok (talk) 19:50, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Unicode characters as aliases edit

Hi, I see you have recently been adding Unicode characters as English aliases for some items (e.g. check mark (Q1143561), pencil (Q14674)). I don't think this is appropriate, because aliases are alternative names meant to make searching easier (see Help:Aliases and the definition at Wikidata:Glossary#Language_attributes). Unicode symbols are not names, and I doubt many people would search for an item using a Unicode character.

On the other hand, adding the characters to statements using Unicode character (P487) seems very helpful. Please keep doing that. --Avenue (talk) 12:29, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I kindof agree. But people would search is not the primary use case of wikidata. But also in this case: when I see this thing: đŸ© (which is a square in windows 7 by default). I copy and paste it to my preferred search engine: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%F0%9F%8D%A9 and it will tell me what it means.
But I agree that the character shouldn't be both in the statement and alias --Shisma (talk) 12:43, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Searching is the primary use case for aliases - see the definition I linked above. If you don't believe me, we can ask for others' opinions at Help talk:Aliases. --Avenue (talk) 17:02, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
no, thanks. I believe you ^^--Shisma (talk) 17:38, 2 October 2013 (UTC)^^Reply

@Avenue: I'm not sure I agree, in some specific cases, can't Unicode characters be valid aliases? I'm thinking about symbol items like Mars symbol (Q498282). Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 08:28, 1 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

@VIGNERON: Sorry for the slow reply; I'm not active on Wikidata anymore. I agree with you that the Mars symbol probably does make sense as an alias, and there are no doubt other similar cases. --Avenue (talk) 22:36, 16 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

MusicBrainz Artist ID = BBC Music Artist ID edit

Hi, I saw your message here and I think the easiest option would be if you would propose a new property for "BBC Music Artist ID", and then keep it up to date with a bot.--Micru (talk) 15:43, 23 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

nope. bad idea. would be 100% redundant--Shisma (talk) 16:02, 23 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Unicode character (P487) as đŸ‡ŻđŸ‡”? edit

Hi,

I just saw that you Unicode character (P487) = đŸ‡ŻđŸ‡” on Japan (Q17). I think this claim would be better on flag of Japan (Q43175) as the Regional Indicator Symbol wer created for flags and not contries. Can I move this claim?

Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 08:15, 1 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

I disagree. The Regional Indicators weren't created for flags but to indicate regions (things that have a ISO 3166 country code).

an implementation might recognize F + R and display this combination with a symbol representing the flag of France.

[1]. An application or font might also use the outline of the country or the coat of arms. Just because apple decided to show flags on their phones, does not mean these characters are ment for flags--Shisma (talk) 09:53, 1 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thanks for the precision and the source.
Then could you add these symboles to all countries (and not only japan).
And should we have both on countries and flags items or should we remove this on flags items?
Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 19:15, 1 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

I think national flags shouldn't have this property with regional indicators as value. Other characters that exclusively represent flags are:

I agree that every country should have it. And I would of course help put it to all the entities, even though I think a bot could to it. Every entity that uses ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code (P297) could be automatically assigned with the correct region indicator Unicode character (P487). --Shisma (talk) 20:12, 1 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Guinan edit

Why? Probably because of wrong polish label of Q28020127. In english it is fictional humanoid, but in polish (which i'm using) it's fikcyjny gatunek humanoida which means something like fictional humanoid species. Guinan is not a species, so i removed it. After your revert i can see, that pl-label of Q28020127 should probably be fikcyjny humanoid, with no gatunek part. thanks, Piastu (talk) 08:09, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Piastu:: fictional humanoid species has its own entity → fictional humanoid species (Q24286894) which does not have a polish label yet. 😉 --Shisma (talk) 08:28, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
thx for hint.pl-label added, Piastu (talk) 08:36, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

FĂŒr die Gattungen kannst du Crassulacean Acid Metabolism 1975–2000, a Check List (Q56269297) verwenden. FĂŒr das bei den Familien verwendete Buch fehlt noch ein Datenobjekt. --Succu (talk) 16:24, 2 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Is "Carthago delenda est" a meme and do you have a reference to back that up? edit

In the current version of Carthago delenda est (Q611895) I see no references in the wikidata item that backs up that the item is a meme. I also checked the English Wikipedia article that is linked to from the item and also found no indication that it is a meme.(not even a Category:Memes which I usually scout for. I also checked the talk page archives and found no reference to the word "meme") I contact you because you made this edit adding the claim that "Carthago delenda est" is a meme. Dbfyinginfo (talk) 00:19, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

it is probably not. 👍 --Shisma (talk) 07:32, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
