Motivation edit

Between June 2016 and June 2017 a new geo-code scheme was introduced in Bangladesh which expanded the lengths of the portions of the code representing the union and the village to three digits each. This scheme thus results in incompatible code changes at administrative division levels below the upazila. As part of this proposal I'd like to rename P4530 "Bangladesh administrative division code (pre-2017)". Note the separate properties for Indian census area codes due to similar incompatibilities across format changes. Mahir256 (talk) 01:41, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Although the June 2016 code lists add the two-digit municipality identifier (not present in 2011 census reports) but do not expand the union/ward codes (which the June 2017 lists do), the continued concordance of the union/ward numbers with the 2011 census codes suggests to me that an intermediate property is not necessary, as it seems that the municipality identifier in the June 2016 lists can be omitted without introducing ambiguity.
  2. Different parts of the same area tended to share the same mahalla code but different ward codes: Bharpasha, for example, has P4530 "10 06 07 04 147" for the part of that area in Ward No. 4, "10 06 07 05 147" for Ward No. 5, "10 06 07 06 147" for Ward No. 6, and so on.
  3. The June 2017 lists have separate columns for a "city code" (before the thana/upazila code) and a "municipality code" (after the thana/upazila code), but they do not seem to overlap at all, especially since the June 2016 lists combine the two into the latter column, so that same combination may be possible here.
