Motivation edit
IEC standard 60529 defines an identifier which classifies and rates the degree of protection provided by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against intrusion, dust, accidental contact, and water. This identifier is commonly provided in product documentation for items such as watches, mobile phones, digital cameras, electronic test and measurement equipment and other electronic devices to provide consumers with an indication of how weatherproof a device may be. - Comment another way to specify this would be to create items for each of these IP codes: this property could then be added as an external-id on these items. Products could be linked to IP items using complies with (P5009). − Pintoch (talk) 16:47, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
- Comment @Pintoch: I think the use of complies with (P5009) IEC 60529 Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code) (Q67226021) is a good idea. This property would still be required as a qualifier. There would be a significant number of possible IP codes--over 300,000 according to a quick calculation I did. Only a small number of these codes, perhaps 100, are widely used. On this basis, do I have support to change the data type to <item> instead of <external-id>? - @Pixeldomain: I see, that's another approach that is worth thinking about too. If you want to use qualifiers then the "string" datatype is probably fine, or perhaps "external-id" would work too. No need for an "item" datatype if complies with (P5009) is to be used, I think. − Pintoch (talk) 07:59, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Pintoch: Planned usage updated to state this property will be a qualifier only to uses of complies with (P5009) IEC 60529 Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code) (Q67226021). I kept the data type as "string" due to the high number of possible codes (300,000+). Pixeldomain (talk) 04:25, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
