number of works accessible online

edit

Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Creative work

DescriptionA qualifier on external identifiers, for the number of works in a collection or items in a database which are freely accessible online (if different from P3740)
Data typeQuantity
Domainqualifier on external identifier statements (note: this should be moved to the property statements)
Example 1Amanullah Khan I of Afghanistan (Q153620): PM20 folder ID (P4293) -> pe/000435,
qualifier: number of works (P3740) → 57,
qualifier: number of works accessible online → 39
Example 2Mahatma Gandhi (Q1001): PM20 folder ID (P4293) -> pe/005823,
qualifier: number of works (P3740) → 669,
qualifier: number of works accessible online → 337
Example 3Bertrand Russell (Q33760): PM20 folder ID (P4293) -> pe/015210,
qualifier: number of works (P3740) → 254,
qualifier: number of works accessible online → 6
Planned usein combination with number of works (P3740), when not all works in a collection are accessible online (e.g., due to intellectual property rights or embargo periods)

Motivation

Currently, about 8000 items link to folders of the 20th Century Press Archives (Q36948990), which comprise scanned press clippings, sometimes only a few, sometimes thousands of them. However, due to intellectual property restrictions, parts - or even all - of the clippings may not be accessible on the web, but only on the premises of ZBW. Both numbers are relevant to users, who want to look up the external resources, and I want to add them as qualifiers. A question in the project chat did not result in any hints how that could be solved with existing properties, so this proposal. I suppose that this situation occurs for other collections, too. Update: A list of items with links to PM20 folders ready to be qualified with P3740 and the proposed property is available here. Jneubert (talk) 10:01, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  Notified participants of WikiProject Authority control,   WikiProject Cultural heritage has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead. Pinging projects possibly interested in this property, hoping for additional eyes on the proposal. Jneubert (talk) 10:01, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

John Samuel: You mean, using number of works (P3740) for the total number of works, and number of records (P4876) for those which are available online? I suppose nobody would understand why two differing numbers are given there, and from the property names and descriptions nobody would be able to tell the difference. Jneubert, ArthurPSmith I am wondering how can we create a generic qualifier for the two (both works as well as records). Why the focus only on works and not on records? John Samuel 21:06, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
John Samuel: I had considered naming the new property "number of items accessible online", in order to have a more generic name. But I was not sure if it would be used outside the domain of creative works (couldn't think of an actual use case), while number of works (P3740) has currently 25,872 uses. So proposed to name the new property "number of works accessible online", while extending that in the description with "or items in a database". Perhaps we could mention explicitely (e.g. in Wikidata usage instructions (P2559)) that the property is intended to be used in combination with number of works (P3740) or number of records (P4876), if not all items are accessible online.
