Motivation
editCurrently Wikimedia language code (P424) is used on both languages and items about WMF projects to identify the language. Accordingly, we can't set a distinct value constraint and P424 has string-datatype.
This proposal is to use the new property on language items.
See depicts Iconclass notation (P1257)+Iconclass notation (P1256) and these for similar pairs of properties.
Please help complete the above proposal (Add your motivation for this property here.) --- Jura 09:02, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
Discussion
edit- Seems fine but I think the language of the properties could be refined to make the distinction more clear BrokenSegue (talk) 17:15, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
- P424's description should be updated once this is created, but I hesitate to do it before. If you want to add something to the proposed property's description, please go ahead. I just added P424 in its description. --- Jura 08:41, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
- I do prefer "Wikidata language code" instead and this may replace the use of ISO 639-1 code (P218) in lemma language suggestion.--GZWDer (talk) 16:09, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
That's currently used by P424, so we can't use it here. Eventually, we might rename that, but in the short term we could only add it as an alias. --- Jura 10:04, 23 May 2021 (UTC)- Oh, I missed "Wikidata" instead of "Wikimedia": yes: good idea. @GZWDer: feel free to update it.--- Jura 10:11, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
- Done. Would also make it easier to store things like "mis-x-Q2417210" (see Q2417210#P424). --- Jura 19:16, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- Support, an important property for languages.--Arbnos (talk) 18:11, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
- Question what is this "Wikidata language code" and how does it differ from the "Wikimedia language code"? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:59, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- The property is for language codes used by Wikidata (see description). The scope of the proposed property differs from P424 (see explanation above) and consequently the datatype (id not string). Also, if we include Wikidata private use codes such as "mis-x-Q2417210", the values will differ from P424. --- Jura 12:25, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
- Question I'm wondering whether a new item should be be created for "Wikidata language code" to use as the subject item rather than the more broad Wikimedia language code (Q21468732)? I went ahead and made one. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 15:57, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
