Motivation Edit
Currently, has effect (P1542) is sometimes used, but it would be better to have a dedicated property, since something doesn't really "cause" news coverage of it. There are currently over 21 thousand wikinews articles with items on wikidata, and this would allow linking their topics to them. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 02:52, 18 September 2019 (UTC)
Discussion Edit
- Strong oppose: use Wikinews' Other Projects line instead. Would clearly be redundant with this approach, IMHO. Nomen ad hoc (talk) 18:30, 18 September 2019 (UTC).
- @Nomen ad hoc: except that, if you look at the Hurricane Dorian example above, its impossible to link multiple wikinews articles to the same item, nor should they be linked like this; each wikinews article is a separate item, and this is to model the relationship between the article's item and the topic's item, not just to provide a link to an article. --DannyS712 (talk) 18:34, 18 September 2019 (UTC)
- You're right. But I still think it would be far better creating real categories on Wikinews. Nomen ad hoc (talk) 18:37, 18 September 2019 (UTC).
- @Nomen ad hoc: there are categories on wikinews. Eg, 2019 Atlantic hurricane season (Q59821940) is linked to the associated category. But when there are only 2 or 3 articles about a topic, we shouldn't need to create a category for the topic to link the topic to wikinews coverage --DannyS712 (talk) 18:40, 18 September 2019 (UTC)
- Well, I don't see why we shouldn't need so. Nomen ad hoc (talk) 18:51, 18 September 2019 (UTC).

- Can we persuade Wikinews that a better approach would be to tag their articles with Wikidata items? ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:14, 19 September 2019 (UTC)
- @ArthurPSmith: the articles are tagged with Wikidata items; this would link to those items, not to the articles themselves --DannyS712 (talk) 18:05, 19 September 2019 (UTC)
- By "tagged" you mean each article has an item. That's not what I meant, but now that you mention it, this relation would be best handled in the other direction using main subject (P921) as we do for all other works that are "about" something. ArthurPSmith (talk) 11:34, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

- Comment If I understand correctly, this would be an inverse property to main subject (P921), since Hurricane Dorian strengthens to Category 5, makes landfall in the Bahamas (Q67000640)main subject (P921)Hurricane Dorian (Q66764432). Isn’t the main subject enough to tie the Wikinews articles to their subject items? Jean-Fred (talk) 15:59, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose I think Jean-Frédéric's idea is sufficient. --Tinker Bell ★ ♥ 19:26, 27 September 2019 (UTC)
