Motivation edit

At the moment, this data is populated in catalog code (P528), which is not a proper scheme and often overlaps with what is really a catalogue number. It is also common to see it filled in series ordinal (P1545).

In classical music:

  • opus number is most often (with some rare exceptions) a chronological serial number, mostly given by the composer themselves.
  • catalogue number, on the contrary, can be compiled independently of the chronology (classified by instrumentation, theme, etc), is compiled by music historians/musicologists/librarians, often decades/centuries after the composer, and is often starting with letter character(s), indicating the catalogue's name

Both numbers can be specified independently of each other. A single musical work can also be identified by a range of opus numbers or range of catalogue codes, also independently of each other. Sometimes the scheme diverges drastically, e.g. one opus includes a dozen catalogue codes: en:List of compositions by Antonio Vivaldi.

The English wiki infobox has both these two parameters used for quite a while. I also plan to also add two separate parameters to the Russian infobox along with import from wikidata, but at the moment linking them to one property makes it problematic. After consulting Wikidata:WikiProject Music, participants also confirmed that this separation would be quite important and useful. Solidest (talk) 10:16, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
